Prof. Paweł Słoniewski from the Clinic of Neurosurgery and Andrzej Skorek M.D. Ph.D. from the Clinic of Otolaryngology have their first successes related to the treatment of pathological diseases of nasal sinus and brain. Interdisciplinarity of the treatment is a response to the increasing number of patients suffering from the mentioned above diseases. The specialists worked on improving security of a patient during a surgery. So far they operated 6 patients (2 with malignant and 4 with non-malignant tumors) whose base of a skull frontal bone, meninges and tumors were resected and then a durable and impermeable barrier separating the inside of the skull and the nasal cavity was recreated. The surgeries were carried out at the Invasive Medicine Centre. No complications were recorded.
This time we present an object unrelated to the history of the MUG. In May 2015, during the doctorate renewal ceremony of prof. Krzysztof Pomian at the University of Warsaw, it was decided to release in Polish the third chapter of his book “Le Musée: une stories mondiale”. The chapter of the book is richly illustrated and shows the evolution of museums and galleries in Central Europe before the First World War. Museum of the MUG is an institutional member is the Association of University Museums (Stowarzyszenie Muzeów Uczelnianych SMU) thanks to which it was issued. The Medical University of Gdańsk and the Warsaw Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion created a consortium project “Genetic characteristics of Reed-Sternberg cells and their macrophages interactions in the classic Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Identification of mechanisms of resistance to chemotherapy and relapse” which was granted in HARMONIA 8 funding scheme of the National Science Centre. An innovative surgical instrument used for the treatment of scoliosis created by Rafal Pankowski M.D. Ph.D. from the Clinic of Orthopaedics and Kinetic Organ Traumatology was registered as an industrial design in the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO). The instrument is used to determine a critical force correction used during a surgery of scoliosis, as well as a safety factor during a direct derotation. The derotator is routinely used during scoliosis surgeries at the Clinic and based on experience it allows to conduct surgeries to a much greater extent than previously. more »
The Medical University of Gdańsk received funding from the Ministry of Science and Higher Education for the Incubator of Innovation+ programme (Inkubator Innowacyjności+) in the amount of 875 000 PLN. The consortium which also included the Gdańsk University of Technology, the University of Gdańsk and a special purpose company PG Excento received in total 3 750 000 PLN. more »
The opening ceremony of the exhibition in the Main Library was held on the 6th February. Guests were welcomed by Anna Grygorowicz, the library director, prof. Marcin Gruchała, the MUG rector and prof. Janusz Limon, who organised the exhibition. Among visitors were former rectors – prof. Barbara Krupa-Wojciechowska, prof. Zdzisław Wajda, prof. Wieslaw Makarewicz, prof. Roman Kaliszan and prof. Janusz Moryś, as well as representatives of the MUG authorities – prof. Jacek Bigda, prof. Tomasz Smiatacz and chancellor Marek Langowski.

Dr Tadeusz Jedrzejczyk from the Department of Public Health and Social Medicine became a chairman of the Gdansk Public Health Council. The Council was established in December last year and is ancillary to the authorities of Gdansk. Its activities comprise oncology, children dentistry, seniors programs and mental health of young people. The Council consists of 12 specialists, including as many as eight specialists from the Medical University of Gdańsk. The position of Deputy Chairman entrusted to Dr Hanna Kujawska-Danecka from the Clinic of Internal Medicine, Connective Tissue Diseases and Geriatrics. Among other members are prof. Piotr Czauderna, Head of the Clinic of Surgery and Urology for Children and Adolescents, prof. Katarzyna Emerich, Head of the Department of Paediatric Dentistry, prof. Tomasz Zdrojewski, Head of the Department of Preventive Medicine and Education, prof. Cybermetrics Lab, a Spanish institution which develop Transparent Ranking, an international ranking of citations, included the Medical University of Gdańsk in their list of over 9 thousand universities most commonly cited in Google Scholar. The MUG came in 1650 place with 14 433 citations. – We are glad that we are among the best universities in the world and one of four Polish medical universities. Nearly 4 thousand PLN was collected during a charity concert “Smile underneath the Winter Star”, which took place on January 20th in the Atheneum Gedanense Novum. The event was organised by the International Federation of Medical Student Associations (IFMSA) Gdańsk branch and members of the Paediatrics Students Circle of the Clinic of Paediatrics, Haemathology and Oncology. Among performing singers were the MUG students. The whole contribution will go to the Department of the Paediatrics Haematology at the University Clinical Centre. more »
On Friday, 20.01.2017, IFMSA – Gdansk department organised surgical suturing workshops for the English Division students form the MUG. Students got familiar with basic surgical technics and used them in practice by suturing pig’s skin. The workshop will be organized periodically. more »
Recognition program "Implementation of modern diagnosis of interstitial diseases, including Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF)" programme at the Clinic of Allergology
The Clinic of Allergology at the MUG has implemented a programme “Implementation of modern diagnosis of interstitial diseases, including Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF)”. It is a part of the project which aims to improve a diagnosis and a treatment of interstitial lung diseases and will include staff training and a purchase of equipment for transbronchial cryobiopsy. Education of doctors in the Programme is sponsored by Roche Poland. more »

Concentration, patience, accuracy – this is what students of the International Federation of Medical Student Associations (IFMSA) Gdańsk branch practiced at surgical suturing workshop on January 13th this year. Practical exercises preceded by a brief theoretical introduction, during which participants learned about types of surgical threads and different ways of dressing surgical wounds. The Medical University of Gdańsk and the University Clinical Center will have a direct bus connection from the Gdańsk main station and the Gdańsk Wrzeszcz station. The first course is scheduled for March 2017 and applies to lines no 115 and no 283. It will be a great convenience for students and employees of the MUG, as well as patients of the UCC.
Przemysław Domagała, a student of doctoral studies at faculty of the Health Sciences with Subfaculty of Nursing and Institute of Maritime and Tropical Medicine received a grant from the Mayor of Sopot. The financial gratification in the amount of 5 000 PLN was awarded in recognition of his achievements in the research programme carried out in the Subfaculty of Nursing. The project “Evaluation of biochemical and psychological parameters of occupational stress among nurses” was promoted by Aleksandra Gaworska-Krzemińska, PhD. more »
