International cooperation and knowledge exchange are key to advancing scientific careers. The Mayor of Gdańsk, in cooperation with the Fahrenheit Union of Universities in Gdańsk supports young researchers by annually selecting three international doctoral students to pursue a one-year placement at one of the member universities: the Medical University of Gdańsk, Gdańsk University of Technology, or the University of Gdańsk. Laureates receive a monthly stipend of PLN 6,500, free accommodation, and reimbursement of travel expenses – allowing them to fully concentrate on their academic development.

The winners of the fourth edition are:

Scientific publications of the scholarship holders

Across the first three editions, four scientific papers have been published with contributions from the laureates. The first, co-authored by Maria Alaide de Oliveira, laureate of the first edition, is entitled Hydrogen evolution reaction catalysed by Co-based metal-organic frameworks and their derivatives. Another publication, ZnIn₂S₄ combined with a flower-like NiAl-layered double hydroxide with enhanced photocatalytic H₂ production activity, was co-authored by Anna Panagiota Souri, also a laureate of the first edition. The third paper, authored by Dipankar Das, laureate of the second edition, was devoted to geopolymer bricks and published under the title Geopolymer bricks: the next generation of construction materials for a sustainable environment. The most recent publication, co-authored by Gilvana P. Siqueira, laureate of the third edition, appeared in Green Chemistry Journal under the title Additively manufactured electrochemical platforms from reclaimed ground tire rubber for environmental monitoring.

The scholarship programme reflects a commitment to advancing science and promoting the city as an open, modern, and talent-friendly place. Another initiative of the Fahrenheit Union of Universities and the City of Gdańsk with a similar spirit is the annual academic procession under the slogan Long Live Science!. This year’s edition will take place on 4th October at 11:00 a.m., starting at the Golden Gate. The event aims to bring together students, faculty members, university authorities and representatives of local government, creating a shared space for strengthening academic bonds.
