Endorsement of the principles of the Charter and the Code at MUG constitutes a reaffirmation of the University’s policies that have been shaped at MUG for many years. The implementation of activities aimed at obtaining the European certificate is planned under one of the goals of the MUG Development Strategy for 2019-2025, as well as within the framework of the implementation of objective 4 of the ””Excellence Initiative – Research University Program titled: Preparing and implementing comprehensive solutions for the professional development of the University’s employees, especially young scientists.

1. MUG Code of Ethics

In accordance with the recommendation from the European Charter for Researchers, our University has created an institutional Code of Ethics as a supplement to the legal and service obligations for employees, doctoral students and students.

Excerpt from the preamble of the Code:

The medical college plays a social role by teaching and educating the younger generation and scientific pursuits in the spirit of truth. The medical nature of the university provides its with a special role in the society, as a result of concern for the protection of human life and health regardless of race, nationality, worldview, social status, and other similar considerations.

2. Gender Equality Plan

In the European Charter for Researchers, the Commission also draws attention to the need to ensure equal gender representation at every level of staff in the institution. Following these recommendations, an equality action plan for 2021-2023/2024 was created at MUG. It sets goals and areas for action, includes data collection and monitoring, and commits to conducting training that is part of the equality action strategy among employees of the Medical University of Gdansk.

There are 4 goals in the Gender Equality Plan for the Medical University of Gdańsk:

  • Goal 1. Increase awareness of the requirement for equal pay for adequate positions.
  • Goal 2. Support the development of women’s scientific careers.
  • Goal 3. Make it easier to combine work and daily life (Work Life Balance).
  • Goal 4. Promote ideas of gender equality and cultural differences.

3. Anti-Bullying Policy

Regulations against bullying, sexual harassment and discrimination of students and doctoral students at the Medical University of Gdańsk.

4. Trust Advocates

Fair and equal treatment is promoted at MUG on many levels. Recently, by order of the Rector, Trust Ombudsmen were appointed to provide confidential and informal assistance in resolving work-related conflicts and in case of disputes and complaints. These persons are dedicated to students, while Ombudsmen for all academic and administrative personnel will also be appointed in the near future.

5. Work environment

People are the foundation on which the Medical University of Gdańsk is built. Many of them combine research or research and teaching with clinical work. As one of the top ten universities in Poland, we would like to distinguish ourselves not only by the quality of our research, but also by setting an example of caring for employees. Professional problems (including their most severe form, defined as burnout) can have different origins and courses. Nevertheless, they almost always impede function and reduce quality of life. We would like to raise awareness of risk factors and encourage prevention among our employees in this area. That is why we invited a respected expert to cooperate with us – Danuta Rocławska.

6. Open Science

MUG signed the declaration as an institution supporting the work to create guidelines for research institutions on the topic of access to open science. The text of the declaration is available at the website.

In addition, MUG has a Excellence of Scientific Publications Unit, which aims to provide comprehensive support for the communication of research results, particularly at various stages of preparing English-language scientific publications.

7. Mobility

The university encourages researchers’ mobility, especially through the Research Travel Grants (RTG) Program, which allows scientists from the Medical University of Gdansk to complete a research internship abroad. The scientific mobility program allows you to gain new experiences and establish or continue collaborations with researchers from foreign centers.

8. Intellectual Property Rights

For all researchers at MUG, a Technology Transfer Center has been created to ensure proper protection of intellectual property rights, including copyrights, and to ensure the University’s cooperation with the economic environment.
