Nearly 40 researchers from the Medical University of Gdańsk presented their projects and the first results of their research during the 1st conference of the winners of the Young Creator of Science (Młody Twórca Nauki) grant competition. The event was held on 2-3 March 2022 in the online formula. The conference was prepared by the Office of the “Excellence Initiative – Research University” Program to give the winners the opportunity to share the results of their work so far and to listen to suggestions from experienced experts.
First laureates of the Young Creator of Science contest were selected nearly a year ago. Out of 175 applications for implementation, 49 research projects were selected, which received the highest expert ratings. The applications were reviewed and assessed by the Committee chaired by Prof. Michał Markuszewski, Vice-Rector for Science of the MUG. Over PLN 2 million has been allocated to their financing under the Excellence Initiative – Research University Program. The funds for the research were allocated to representatives of all faculties of the University. Grants were received by 29 people from the Faculty of Medicine, 9 people from the Faculty of Health Sciences, 8 people from the Faculty of Pharmacy and 3 people from the Intercollegiate Faculty of Biotechnology UG & MUG.
The event began with the speech of Prof. Marcina Gruchała, Rector of the Medical University of Gdańsk. Later on, the conference was hosted by Prof. Tomasz Bączek, rector’s Plenipotentiary for the Excellence Initiative – Research University Program, and the leaders of the Priority Research Areas – Professors: Jacek Jassem, Krzysztof Narkiewicz and Ryszard Tomasz Smoleński and guests invited by them.
Due to the large number of participants, the conference formula assumed synthetic, several-minute-long presentations, which were the starting point for the discussion. A detailed list of speakers and topics for their presentation are available on Polish-language event’s website. Thanks to the wide range of interests and specializations of scientists, during 12 sessions, the participants could learn about a wide range of topics and scientific works undertaken at the University: from research on the molecular basis of cancer risk in a patient with a rare genetic mutation through the analysis of materials used in 3D printing to simulate cardiological procedures, right up to the impact of physical training on cognitive functions. The scientists also shared their successes, which have resulted in their work so far, such as publications in prestigious journals or grant applications submitted to external institutions.
Although the pandemic period did not make the task easier for scientists (especially since some research carried out under the research projects are clinical trials), after hearing the reports, the Priority Research Area leaders agreed: the Young Creator of Science grant program is a very successful investment in the young generation of researchers. During the conference, they showed not only interesting ideas and a good methodological workshop, but also commitment and scientific passion, which undoubtedly brings them closer to their next successes.
Recruitment for the 2nd edition of the Young Science Creator grant program will start in the current academic year.
