Professor Ewa Łojkowska, Head of the Laboratory of Plant Protection and Biotechnology of the Intercollegiate Faculty of Biotechnology of the University of Gdańsk and the Medical University of Gdańsk, Dean of the Faculty in term 2005-2012 is a laureate of the City of Gdańsk Jan Heweliusz Scientific Award 2021 in category of natural sciences. The Professor was distinguished for outstanding scientific achievements in phytopathological research, in particular for genetics and diagnostics of bacterial plant pathogens. The award ceremony was traditionally held on 28th of January, on the birthday of Jan Heweliusz. The ceremony was attended by Prof. Michał Markuszewski, Vice-Rector for Science of the Medical University of Gdańsk.
The award in the category of humanities and social sciences was awarded to Prof. Małgorzata Omilanowska-Kiljańczyk from the University of Gdańsk for outstanding achievements in the country and abroad in the field of art sciences.
ABOUT THE LAUREATE
Since 1993, she has been associated with the Intercollegiate Faculty of Biotechnology of the University of Gdańsk and the Medical University of Gdańsk, where in term 2005-2012 she was the Dean. In 2005-2019, Professor headed the Department of Biotechnology at IFB UG & MUG, and currently she is the Head of the Department of Plant Protection and Biotechnology at IFB UG & MUG. Prof. Łojkowska specializes in plant biotechnology, molecular phytopathology and plant biochemistry. She is the author and co-author of over 200 scientific publications in the field of broadly understood plant biotechnology. She was awarded the Golden Cross of Merit (2001), the Medal of the National Education Commission (2001) and the Knight’s Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta (2012).
HISTORIC AWARD OF PROF. MYŚLIWIEC
It is worth recalling that the first woman honoured with the Heweliusz Prize in the category of natural sciences was Prof. Małgorzata Myśliwiec, Head of the Department of Paediatrics, Diabetology and Endocrinology of the MUG. The Professor was distinguished for outstanding scientific achievements in the diagnosis and cell therapy of children with type 1 diabetes in the early stages of the disease. The award has been presented on 28th of January 2020.
