The National Information Processing Institute – National Research Institute has published data on the level of vaccination against COVID-19 by members of the academic community of universities. At the forefront of each category were students, doctoral students and employees of the Medical University of Gdańsk. Data provided by newspaper Forum Akademickie shows that 95.5% of MUG students have benefited from vaccination against COVID-19, which is the best result in the group of Polish public universities. Our employees and PhD students also came in the lead, taking 4th place in their categories, with vaccination rates of 95.7% and 94.6%, respectively.
− Thank you to all members of our university community for taking advantage of the opportunity that modern medicine has created for us to vaccinate against COVID-19. It has significantly facilitated the traditional form of didactic classes and research, as well as the provision of life-saving medical services − says Dr. Habil. Tomasz Smiatacz, Vice-Rector for Student Affairs, head of the Division of Infectious Diseases of the MUG, provincial consultant in the field of infectious diseases. − At the same time, I would like to remind you to take the third dose, which will increase our immunity and, in case of an infection, allow the disease to pass through much more smoothly.
Since the outbreak of the pandemic, the authorities of the Medical University of Gdańsk have actively encouraged the use of commonly available, effective and safe vaccinations against COVID-19. As emphasized in the appeal by the Rector Prof. Marcin Gruchała, (...) medical nature of the university gives it a unique role in society, resulting from care for the protection of human life and health. Responsible and thoughtful behaviour based on reliable knowledge and credible scientific proofs lies on all people engaged in creating of healthcare system, especially on these who build the academic community of medical university.
The efficient carrying out the process of vaccinations was possible thanks to the good cooperation and model organization of this process by the MUG clinical hospitals – University Clinical Centre in Gdańsk and the University Centre of Maritime and Tropical Medicine in Gdynia. UCK is the undisputed leader in Pomerania and is at the forefront in the country when it comes to the number of vaccinations.
– Our hospital was actively involved in the vaccination campaign from the very first day. We quickly organized and launched points that were accepted by all willing people from our region and beyond. We have performed over 300 000 vaccinations in total – says Adam Sudoł M.D., Deputy General Director of the UCC for Medical Logistics, responsible for vaccinations programme at the UCC. – It should be emphasized that students of many faculties of the MUG and young doctors who played coordination, organizational and information roles, acting together with the nursing staff in the implementation of the vaccination process, were actively involved in the vaccination campaign conducted by our hospital. The efficient vaccination campaign is mainly due to them.
Since the outbreak of the SARS-CoV-2 virus pandemic, the University Center of Maritime and Tropical Medicine in Gdynia has been a key centre in Pomerania in the fight against the epidemic. The MUG clinical hospital was the first one fully prepared to provide professional care for patients infected with coronavirus.
– Last year, we performed over 23 000 vaccinations against COVID-19 as part of the newly organized points: nodal, universal and during the action “Szczepimy się w majówkę” – explains Prof. Marcin Renke, Director of the University Centre of Maritime and Tropical Medicine. – It is worth recalling that it was at UCMMiT that the first swab collection point in Poland was established to identify the SARS-CoV-2 virus in the drive-thru formula, in which MUG students collected most of the more than 22 000 samples obtained from our patients.
