MUG joins international GreenNanoBone project

15.07.2025

The Medical University of Gdańsk has joined the prestigious GreenNanoBone project, funded by the European Union. The initiative aims to develop innovative and sustainable biomaterials for the treatment of medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ).

A key focus of the project will be 4D biomaterials – bioactive, biocompatible and antimicrobial materials derived from plant-based nanoparticles extracted from potato waste. These materials are intended to support bone and tissue regeneration in an environmentally friendly manner. The project merges advanced medical research with circular economy principles. Studies will be conducted both in vitro and in vivo, with support from artificial intelligence to accelerate development. The goal is to deliver safe, effective and eco-friendly medical solutions.

The project will run for four years (2025–2029) with a total budget of over €8.6 million. The consortium consists of 18 partners from across Europe, including two Polish universities: Medical University of Gdańsk and Jagiellonian University. The project is led by the University of Liverpool, with Dr Katarzyna Gurzawska-Comis from Aarhus University serving as coordinator.

At the #MUG, the research will be carried out at the Department of Embryology under the supervision of Prof. Michał Pikuła. The team will focus on evaluating the safety and effectiveness of the new biomaterials in in vitro studies. More about the department: medreg.gumed.edu.pl

The project’s kick-off meeting took place in Gdańsk on 30th June – 1st July 2025 and was an opportunity to introduce the project partners, define roles, and showcase both the MUG and the city of Gdańsk to our European guests.
