The Medical University of Gdańsk (MUG) is among the nine medical universities in Poland which, by decision of the Ministry of Health, will receive funding under the National Recovery and Resilience Plan. The initiative, which will allocate 190 million PLN, covers both the reimbursement of expenses incurred for the modernisation and upgrading of the university’s facilities as well as the implementation of entirely new investments.
– First and foremost, I would like to thank the entire team that worked on the application, which enabled us to secure funding from the National Recovery and Resilience Plan. 190 million PLN is a substantial amount that will allow us to carry out extensive investments in the university’s infrastructure, leading to improved accessibility in medical programs. Moreover, the comfort of both our students and staff will increase – said Prof. Michał Markuszewski, Rector of the MUG.
In total, 18 investment projects have been planned across four key areas: preclinical education infrastructure (12 projects), clinical education (4 projects), library modernisation (1 project), student housing modernisation (1 project).
New buildings and modernisations
So, what exactly will change? In short – quite a lot. Starting with the Collegium Biomedicum building, over 18 million PLN will be allocated to finance, among others, the modernisation of the lecture halls.
A brand-new building will be constructed on ul. Tuwima, serving both the faculty and students. The construction will cost over 38 million PLN.
Another new facility will be built at ul. Dębowa 23A, with an investment of approximately 24 million PLN. It will include seminar and laboratory rooms.
The Atheneum Gedanense Novum building will also undergo modernisation, with renovation work in the auditorium and shared areas estimated at around 6 million PLN.
More than 12 million PLN will be allocated to renovations at the al. Hallera building, focusing on lecture halls, shared spaces and educational rooms.
The construction progress of the University Dental Centre, adjacent to the MUG rectorate, is already clearly visible. Over 33 million PLN from the National Recovery and Resilience Plan has been allocated to this project, with the official opening planned for the end of this year.
A total of 19 million PLN has been earmarked for the modernisation of student housing facilities. Additionally, over 6 million PLN will be invested in equipping simulation and educational laboratories, including the purchase of medical phantoms, simulators and specialised equipment.
Time is of the essence, but…
It is clear that the Medical University of Gdańsk is reaching an entirely new level in its development. Some of the investments are already visible, while others will soon take shape. All planned work must be completed by 31st March 2026.
– We are fully aware that we don’t have much time to complete these projects, but I can assure you that with our determination and hard work, we will finish everything on schedule – said Prof. Michał Markuszewski, Rector of the MUG.
