Prof. Dagmara Hering, MD, from the MUG’s Department of Hypertension and Diabetology, has been named principal investigator for Poland of a multicenter randomized trial evaluating the effectiveness of renal artery denervation in patients with untreated hypertension.

-The procedures will be performed using an advanced radiofrequency catheter with a basket-shaped tip with six electrodes in a spiral arrangement, which provides better contact with the renal artery wall and simultaneous ablation in all parts of the renal artery to ensure peripheral ablation and greater efficacy of the procedure, explains Prof. D. Hering.

Approved by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration of the U.S. government) in November 2023, the surgical method using renal artery denervation is the first invasive treatment method that has become a breakthrough in interventional cardiology and hypertension treatment. The Hypertension Guidelines, published in 2023 by the European Society of Hypertension (ESH), recommend renal denervation as the third pillar of hypertension treatment. These recommendations have been upheld in the European Society of Cardiology guidelines, published concurrently with their announcement at this year’s ESC Congress in London.

It should be noted that the results of the multicenter RADIANCE-HTN TRIO trial using renal denervation in the treatment of patients with resistant hypertension, led by Prof. Hering together with the MUG team, became the basis for the inclusion of this treatment method in the ESH 2023 guidelines. Prof. Dagmara Hering has 15 years of experience in treating hypertension with renal denervation. For years, she has provided training to physicians from many countries around the world, and over the past year, she has repeatedly provided training to physicians and specialists from France, Germany, England, Norway, Bulgaria, Lithuania, Slovakia, Hungary, Tunisia and Saudi Arabia on renal denervation patient qualification and post-procedure management (Renal denervation: when, how and who?).
