The latest issue of the scientific journal Hypertension published the first results of the project The Impact of War Stress on the Development and Progression of Hypertension and Cardiovascular Disease in Ukrainian Women Refugees conducted at the Department of Hypertension and Diabetology of the Medical University of Gdansk in collaboration with the Department of Psychiatry of the MUG, Université Catholique de Louvain (Belgium) and the University of Lausanne (Switzerland).
The article Association of High Blood Pressure With Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder in Ukrainian Women Refugees showed that the prevalence of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) among refugee women (22%), was 7 times higher than among Ukrainian women before the war (3%). Overall stress levels were significantly higher among women with hypertension, and PTSD diagnoses were 9 times more common among women with hypertension than among women without hypertension, accompanied by a persistent sense of reduced security. The article is available here.
Further publications are planned to include detailed cardiovascular assessment, reassessment of stress questionnaires, and results of psychiatric consultation. The research is carried out within the framework of project No. 2022/45/P/NZ5/02812 co-funded by the National Science Center under the POLONEZ BIS 2 competition and the European Union Framework Program for Research and Innovation Horizon 2020 under contract No. 945339 within the framework of “Marie Skłodowska-Curie” activities.
