29.10.2024

Medical University of Gdańsk has once again been ranked among the world’s top universities in the latest edition of the Times Higher Education World University Rankings.

The university received top scores in the Research Quality and Industry Income indicators, reaffirming its position among prestigious academic institutions known not only for high-quality research infrastructure and conducted research but also for a high rate of commercialisation of its outcomes. – Our thanks go to all our staff, not only researchers, for their dedication and efforts. It is essential that we improve our results year by year. High-quality task execution is what we aim for, says the MUG Rector, Prof. Michał Markuszewski. – MUG aspires to be one of the most valued and recognised universities, a first choice not only for students but also for distinguished researchers, whom we already invite to collaborate, adds the Rector.

MUG was ranked among a record-breaking 2,039 academic institutions participating in the ranking. It took its place in the top ten among 44 Polish universities and in the 1001-1200 position in the overall category. University Oxford took the lead in first category, whereas Wroclaw Medical University in the latter. In the category for strictly medical universities, i.e., Medicine & Dentistry, MUG ranked 5th among 15 classified Polish universities (tied with the Medical University of Białystok). Additionally, in the Health Sciences category, covering fields like nursing, it ranked 4th out of 20 universities – again, tied with the Medical University of Białystok. Notably, out of the six indicators considered in the university’s evaluation, the MUG improved in four key areas over the past year, including education and research commercialisation.

I am pleased that we have maintained our international and national positions. What is particularly satisfying is the improvement in the research environment and research quality categories. This reflects our University’s consistently implemented development strategy based on increasing research quality, says Prof. Anna Żaczek, Vice-Rector for Development and Cooperation at the MUG.In my view, the results motivate us to reach further and aim higher. In the near future, with the MUG being the only medical university in Poland involved in the ACE2-EU alliance of European universities, we plan to intensify international cooperation, which should further strengthen our international standing.

Through international collaborations, including academic and research initiatives, students and doctoral candidates will receive even better preparation for their careers and gain essential skills for social engagement and fulfilling their medical mission in challenging times. One of the most forward-looking and increasingly important areas for the University is research commercialisation, in which the MUG is achieving steadily better results. This is a strong area of university growth, as the ranking results also demonstrate. The full ranking is available at Times Higher Education
