We know the winners of the "Student Grant" competition

14.08.2024

At the beginning of the year, the portfolio of initiatives implemented at the Medical University of Gdansk, thanks to the support of the Excellence Initiative – Research University program, was enriched by a new grant program. The Student Grant was created as a proposal for students interested in undertaking research work before they graduate. Under the program, they could apply for funding of up to 25,000 PLN for a research project.

In this call, which ended on May 15 this year, 65 applications were submitted for a total amount of more than 1.5 million PLN. They were evaluated by a team of reviewers taking the following criteria into account:

  • the originality of the research problem,
  • research methodology adopted,
  • the relevance of the research results in a theoretical/practical context,
  • innovative nature of the research
  • the reasonableness of the costs in relation to the object and scope of the planned work.

Funding (a total of nearly 800,000 PLN) was awarded for the implementation of 37 projects prepared by male and female students of medicine (including English Division), pharmacy, biotechnology, medical analytics, health psychology and public health. The list of projects is available on the Extranet.

Importantly, the winners will receive not only financial support, but also mentoring during the research, and dedicated training or workshops to develop their chosen competencies and skills. The purpose of this additional support is to motivate them to set and achieve ambitious goals, such as publishing research results in respected journals.

This massive interest in the program and the number of applications we received prove that we have accurately identified the needs and expectations on the part of budding scientists – says Prof. Tomasz Bączek, Rector’s Representative for the “Excellence Initiative – Research University” Program. – I am very pleased that with the support of the IDUB program, nearly 40 people will realize their first semi-independent scientific adventure. “Research training” like that, under the guidance of an experienced mentor, will certainly translate into earlier development of a range of skills necessary for later stages of the career, and increase the chances of future scientific success.
