By the decision of the Electoral College, Prof. Michał Markuszewski, Vice-Rector for Science, was elected Rector of the Medical University of Gdańsk for the term 2024-2028. As of 1 September this year, he will replace Prof. Marcin Gruchała, who has held the position of rector of the MUG since 2016. The election was decided by the College of Electors, consisting of 442 eligible voters representing all groups of the academic community: staff, students and doctoral students.
– I would like to thank you all most sincerely. To those who voted for me in particular, but also to those who voted for my opponents. This is a celebration of our University, a celebration of us all. The votes cast for the counter-candidates are for me a signal and information as to what topics are important to you. I will certainly work on them in the future. – said Prof. Markuszewski.
– Huge congratulations to the Rector Elect, Professor Michał Markuszewski. I would also like to congratulate the counter-candidates. The next few years of working together for our University lie ahead of us. I would like to thank you for taking part in the vote – this shows how much everyone cares about the further good and dynamic development of our University – said Prof. Marcin Gruchała, Rector of the Medical University of Gdańsk. – I would also like to declare my readiness to cooperate with the new Rector and that from now on no key decision will be taken without consulting the Rector Elect.
In the vote held on 24 April in Sports Centre of the MUG Prof. Michal Markuszewski came out ahead of Prof. Edyta Szurowska, Vice-Rector for Clinical Affairs, and Prof. Radosław Owczuk, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine. In the second round, he received 256 votes and his rival Prof. Szurowska received 175 votes.
In his election programme, Prof. Markuszewski declared, among other things, the continuous improvement of teaching and learning processes, support for top-quality scientific research, support for the activities of the management of the medical entities of which we are the founding body, and the strengthening of teaching, research and clinical infrastructure.
– Participation is a key element in building an open and inclusive atmosphere at our University. I am committed to enabling all stakeholders in the University community to express their opinions, exchange ideas and co-shape the academic environment – Prof. Michał Markuszewski wrote in his election programme. – I would like to build good relations with colleagues and make the organisation’s activities more flexible by adequately planning, organising, and understanding every activity, with the participation of employees, at every level of the organisation.
In addition, the Rector Elect has declared measures aimed at developing the professional competencies and skills of research and teaching staff, clinicians, the administrative corps, doctoral students, and students.
In the clinical area, the Rector envisages ensuring that every patient of our medical entities receives access to the highest quality of medical services medical services, based on high knowledge, empathy, respect, and a personalised approach.
