Prof. Jan Maciej Zaucha with the MRA award

During the conference Agencja Badań Medycznych – impuls dla rozwoju nauki, zdrowia i innowacji (Medical Research Agency – impuls for the develompent of science, health and innovations) organized on 5th of December 2023 in Warsaw, President of the MRA Dr. Habil. Radosław Sierpiński handed in awards Medycyna Jutra (Medicine of Tomorrow). The award in category Main Researcher has been given to Prof. Jan Maciej Zaucha, Head of the Department of Haematology & Transplantology of the MUG, who also took part in one of the discussion panels consisting the event.

This is a very great honor for me as a clinician looking for effective therapy in the treatment of Hodgkin’s lymphoma. It is worth noting that despite the usually good results of treatment of Hodgkin’s lymphoma, some patients are overtreated, which results in unnecessary toxicity, while other patients do not respond to treatment and require its intensification – said Prof. Jan Maciej Zaucha, Head of the Department of Haematology & Transplantology of the MUG.

The award winner is implementing two projects at our University co-financed by MRA for a total amount of almost PLN 37 million. There are projects RAFTING-2019 (Radiation-free therapy for the initial treatment of good prognosis early non-bulky HL, defined by a low metabolic tumor volume and a negative interim PET after 2 chemotherapy cycles) and N-BURGUND (Use of nivolumab (N) followed by chemotherapy: bendamustine, gemcitabine and dexamethasone-BGD with autologous bone marrow transplantation in patients with Hodgkin’s lymphoma refractory to 1-line treatment).

The Medycyna Jutra award is an expression of recognition for many years of hard work to improve the Polish health care system and activities for patients. Apart from Prof. Jan Maciej Zaucha, this year’s awards have been received by: Polish Association of Patients with Vasculitis „Vasculitis Poland” in category Non-Governmental Organization, Maria Skłodowska-Curie National Research Institute of Oncology in category Institute, AstraZeneca in category Leader of Innovations Warsaw Health Innovation Hub, Adamed Pharma S.A. in category Company and Children’s Memorial Health Institute in category Clinical Research Support Centre.
