Medical analytics graduate at the forefront nationwide

Representing the Medical University of Gdańsk, Edyta Wesołowska, M.Sc., took second place in the National Competition for Master’s Theses of Graduates of the Faculty of Medical Analytics organised online on 10 May 2023. The awarded thesis entitled Tracing the genetic variability of the SARS-CoV-2 Virus by methods used in routine molecular diagnostics was written in the Department of Laboratory Medicine under the direction of Dr. Habil. Krzysztof Lewandowski.

The nationwide competition was entered by 11 graduates of medical analytics – winners of competitions at their home universities. The first place was won by Agata Maciaszek, M.Sc., representing the Medical University of Silesia in Katowice, with her thesis entitled: Evaluation of sclerostin concentration in the blood plasma of women suffering from rheumatoid arthritis treated with tumor necrosis factor-alpha inhibitors. Gabriela Kruk, M.Sc., from the Jagiellonian University Collegium Medicum in Krakow, came second, with her thesis entitled: Study of the effect of selected analgesics on the phagocytic activity of mouse macrophages.

The competition was organised by the Association of the College of Laboratory Medicine in Poland. The evaluation of the competition entries was carried out by independent academics from the medical universities represented in the competition. From the Medical University of Gdańsk, these were: Prof. Barbara Lewko, from the Department of Pharmaceutical Pathophysiology, who acted as a reviewer, and Prof. Maciej Jankowski, Head of the Department of Clinical Chemistry, who was a member of the jury evaluating the competition presentations.
