Summary of 5th OSSC

The 5th edition of the Oncological Student Scientific Conference (OSSC) took place on the 17th and 18th of March 2023 at the Medical University of Gdańsk. The first day of the event consisted of 7 different on-site workshops.

Participants had the opportunity to apply their knowledge in genetics in order to solve clinical cases focusing on hereditary cancer syndromes during a workshop led by Prof. Beata Lipska-Zietkiewicz from the Department of Biology and Medical Genetics of the MUG entitled Interactive Cases: Genetics in Oncology.

They also had a discussion on how to break news about unfavourable prognoses to patients and relatives, how to provide emotional support to them, and how to protect oneself in a workshop by Anna Wyszadko, Ph.D. from the Division of Palliative Medicine of the MUG (Breaking Bad News: Effective Communication and Emotional Management). In addition, attendants learned how to perform core needle breast biopsy under ultrasound guidance (Marcin Śniadecki, Ph.D. from the Division of Gynecology and Obstetrics of the MUG), how to manage acute states in pediatric oncology through a simulation workshop (Konrad Gądek, MD, doctoral student from the Department of Oncology & Radiotherapy of the MUG), and also practiced their ultrasound skills in a workshop conducted by Bartosz Regent, MD from the Division of Radiology of the University Clinical Centre, clinical hospital of the MUG etitled Abdominal Ultrasounds in Oncology.

Participants had the opportunity to solve clinical cases in pediatrics in an interactive workshop led by Małgorzata Styczewska, MD entitled Interactive Clinical Cases in Pediatric Oncology and practice their suturing skills and learn advanced suturing techniques in Surgical Skills workshop conducted by Shraddha Singh, 5th year medical – ED student.

On the second day, students were able to present and discuss their scientific work during three competitive student sessions. Active participants presented case reports, original research, and meta-analysis encompassing oncology and pediatric oncology. In between the student sessions, two keynote lectures were delivered. The first lecture was delivered by Prof. Rafał Dziadziuszko, Head of the Department of Oncology & Radiotherapy of the MUG and entitled Radiotherapy – Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow. The second one delivered by Prof. Ewa Bień from the Department of Paediatrics, Haemathology & Oncology was entitled It needs to be hard: Medical staff coping with the suffering of children with cancer.

Awards were given to:

  1. Apolonia Miążek (Jagiellonian University Medical College): Correlation between Endometrial Cancer Clinicopathologic Features and Dendritic Cells within Tumor Microenvironment – Grand Prix, 1st place in Original research and Meta-Analysis
  2. Paulina Skrzypkowska (Medical University of Gdańsk): Tumor-to-tumor metastases to intracranial and spinal neoplasms – a meta-analysis of 246 cases – 1st place in Original research and Meta-Analysis
  3. Jakub Czarny (Poznan University of Medical Sciences): Refractory liver cancer with NRAS gene driver mutation – case report – 1st place in Case Reports: Pediatric Oncology
  4. Katarzyna Janik (Department of Cranio-Maxillo-Facial Surgery Unit, School of Medicine with The Division of Dentistry in Zabrze, Katowice): Consequences of palliative treatment of malignant breast neoplasm in the form of medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw – 1st place in Case Reports: Oncology

Distinctions:

  1. Oliwia Pytlewska (Medical University of Gdańsk): Diagnostic dilemmas in a 10-year-old refugee from Ukraine with suspected recurrence of extraosseous Ewing Sarcoma
  2. Katarzyna Dudzińska (Medical University of Gdańsk): Cutaneous melanoma metastases imitating herpes zoster
  3. Olga Racińska (Medical University of Lodz): Paraneoplastic rash as the first symptom of a rare retroperitoneal desmoid tumor
