We got to know the results of this year’s edition of the Wizjonerzy Zdrowia (Visionaries of Health) competition organized by the editors of the Wprost newspaper. Among the winners was Prof. Piotr Trzonkowski, Head of the Department of Medical Immunology of the Medical University of Gdańsk, awarded in the category Wizjoner Nauki (Visionary of Science). The award ceremony took place on 27th of March 2023 in Warsaw.
The jury of the award unanimously appreciated the research of Prof. Trzonkowski on the therapeutic use of regulatory T lymphocytes in autoimmune diseases, which allowed to develop a new method of fighting this type of disease. The experiments conducted by Professor are an opportunity to create an innovative therapy that will be used in the treatment of early forms of type 1 diabetes and the prevention of this disease. MUG specialist as the first in the world, together with Prof. Małgorzata Myśliwiec, Head of the Department of Paediatrics, Diabetology and Endocrinology and Prof. Natalia Marek-Trzonkowska from the Division of Family Medicine of our University used Treg lymphocytes in the treatment of type 1 diabetes and is still developing this method. Modified regulatory cells can also be used in the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases, e.g. multiple sclerosis or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.
The awards gala was combined with a conference entitled Health care system in Poland. A recipe for the future. Numerous experts representing Polish academic centres and medical institutions, led by the Ministry of Health, participated in the discussions. In the panel entitled Challenges 2023: How do we implement the Plan for Rare Diseases? Diagnostics, treatment, comprehensive care took part Prof. Aleksandra Żurowska, Head of the Department of Paediatrics, Nephrology and Hypertension of the MUG.
