The IDUB Programme Office has prepared an offer for students interested in scientific careers and Ph.D. students. The course, organised in cooperation with the Students’ Scientific Association, is designed to develop the competencies needed to function in the modern world of science, which are not possible to acquire during the standard curriculum. More than 50 people signed up to take part in the first edition.

The “Essentials of a Young Researcher” workshop is aimed at the needs of students and doctoral students taking their first steps on the path of scientific development. Talking to the experienced, active scientists involved in this project will provide a large dose of inspiration. I am pleased that such a valuable form of support has been created for students starting out, including many members of the Student Scientific Society. I am convinced that it will soon bear fruit in the form of new innovative research projects. – said Maria Renke, president of the Student Scientific Society.

The first two workshops of the course were held on 18-19 and 26 February this year. The Designing a research project block was prepared and conducted by Piotr Spychalski, Ph.D. from the Department of General, Endocrine and Transplant Surgery at the Medical University of Gdańsk, while the Scientific project in progress: stages, milestones, management tools, reporting – by Anna Supernat, Ph.D. from the Department of Translational Oncology at the Medical University of Gdańsk, coordinator of the Centre for Biostatistical and Bioinformatics Analysis (CABiB).

The upcoming meetings will be hosted by experts from our University:

Young researchers will learn, among other things, about the different stages of working on a publication and the various publication paths, as well as what to consider when selecting a journal. A workshop is also planned on organising experimental research, which will be led by Peter Grešner, Ph.D. from the Department of Translational Oncology and CABiB, and on preparing an application to a funding institution, whose speakers will be experts from the National Science Centre (NCN).

Our goal is to develop and professionalize research competence among students and doctoral students with the highest potential. Our experienced scientists and invited experts from outside the university will help them develop a package of skills that seem essential from the perspective of early entry and successful functioning in the national and international scientific fields. I believe that the proposed support will directly translate into, among other things, an increase in their ability to apply for research funds and their ability to write scientific publications that match the level of recognized journals. – adds Prof. Tomasz Bączek, Rector’s Representative for the “Excellence Initiative – Research University” Program
