Professor Natalia Marek-Trzonkowska from the Division of Family Medicine of the MUG, dyrektor of the International Centre for Cancer Vaccine Science of the UG and Karolina Piekarska, Ph.D. from the Laboratory of Clinical Immunology and Transplantation of the UCC, doctoral student at the Division of Family Medicine of the MUG received the Minister of Education And Science’s Award for significant achievements in implementation activities. The awards were presented on 19th of February 2023 during the Gala of Polish Science, accompanying the 1st World Copernican Congress.

Research conducted by the Laureates led to the creation of 2 inventions related to Tregs cell therapy in 2020, which were submitted to the European Patent Office and published in the journal Nature Communications. These inventions make it possible to enhance the therapeutic potential of Tregs lymphocytes grown in vitro in the presence of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs). The developed methods were developed thanks to the cooperation of the Medical University of Gdańsk, the University of Gdańsk and PolTREG SA, which commercializes and implements them for the treatment of type 1 diabetes in children.
