Professor Roman Nowicki, Head of the Department of Dermatology, Venereology and Allergology of the Medical University of Gdańsk, has been awarded this year’s Sopocka Muza (Sopot Muse) award in the field of science. The award was presented on 14th of January 2023 in recognition of scientific and didactic achievements to date. Laudation in honor of Prof. Nowicki was delivered by Dr. Habil. Agnieszka Zimmermann, Assoc. Prof., Vice-Rector for the Quality of Teaching of the MUG.

Sopocka Muza has been awarded by the President of the City of Sopot since 1974 in recognition of achievements in the field of science, culture and art, and for the best young artists. Prof. Roman Nowicki was honored with it for his contribution to the development of research in the field of skin and venereal diseases, as well as allergology. Thanks to pioneering, detailed mycological research conducted among employees of large workplaces in the macroregion of Gdańsk and research on the enzymatic activity of dermatophytes, an epidemiological picture of mycological flora and fungal infections in our region was obtained, and Prof. Nowicki became a well-known person in Poland and abroad.
Since 1982, the Professor’s scientific and professional life has been inextricably linked with the fate of our University, where he has gone through all career paths – from Assistant, Assistant Professor, to the position of Associate Professor and Full Professor. For 6 years (2006-2012) he even was the University’s Spokesperson.

Professor Nowicki is the editor and co-author of 6 monographs and a textbook entitled Dermatologia i choroby przenoszone drogą płciową (Dermatology and sexually transmitted diseases). Edited by him in 2019, the first Polish interdisciplinary recommendations on the diagnosis and treatment of atopic dermatitis were developed and published, and a year later – Polish recommendations on the diagnosis and treatment of urticaria and angioedema and interdisciplinary recommendations on the use of biological drugs in patients with atopic dermatitis.
In addition to research activities, Prof. Nowicki is actively engaged in didactic activities related to the education of students of the Faculty of Medicine of the MUG, and in the Clinic he heads, specialization training in the field of childhood skin diseases, allergic skin diseases and medical mycology is conducted for dermatologists, paediatricians, allergologists, microbiologists, infectious diseases doctors and pharmacologists .
He is a member of many international scientific organizations, he also holds important positions in Polish scientific societies, including is a member of the Presidium of the Main Board of the Polish Society of Dermatology, he was the Vice-Chairman of the Gdańsk Branch of the Polish Society of Allergology in 2004-2006, since 2014 he has chaired the Maritime Branch and is the Vice-Chairman of the Allergology Section of this Society.
On the initiative of Prof. Nowicki, the International Academy of Dermatology and Allergology is organized, the 19th edition of which will take place from 10th to 12th of February 2023 in Gdynia. The event is under the honorary patronage of the Rector of the Medical University of Gdańsk.
