Matriculations of new students

Matriculations at all faculties of the Medical University of Gdańsk have ended. First-year students were officially welcomed into the academic community during ceremonies held at the end of September this year. In the academic year 2022/2023 nearly 1 400 new students will start their education at our University.


FACULTY OF PHARMACY

More than 200 first-year students of the Faculty of Pharmacy were the first to be matriculated. The ceremony, which took place on 27 September this year, was presided over by the Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy – Prof. Wojciech Kamysz. It was also attended by Prof. Marcin Gruchała – Rector of the Medical University of Gdańsk, Prof. Michał Markuszewski – Vice Rector for Science, Dr. Habil. Agnieszka Zimmermann, Pharm.D., Assoc. Prof. – Vice-Rector for the Quality of Teaching, Prof. Marcin Renke – Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences, Prof. Paweł Zagożdżon – Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and by Deputy Deans of the Faculty of Pharmacy: Dr. Habil. Magdalena Prokopowicz, Assoc. Prof., Dr. Habil. Danuta Siluk and Dr. Habil. Bartosz Wielgomas. Prof. Jaroslaw Sączewski of the Department of Organic Chemistry of the MUG was also invited to give a guest lecture. The hybrid event was hosted by Adrian Szewczyk, Ph.D. from the Department of Physical Chemistry at the MUG.

The newly admitted students were welcomed by the Rector of the MUG – Prof. Marcin Gruchała. At the same time the Recto noted that the time of study is not only a period of developing scientific interests and acquiring knowledge but also of making new friends and acquaintances.

Then Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy – Prof. Wojciech Kamysz addressed the audience. He welcomed students to our University and congratulated them on their good results in the recruitment process, which enabled them to get into their dream studies. In the next part of the ceremony, Agnieszka Westphal – a first-year pharmacy student as asked to take the oath on behalf of first-year students. The oath rota was read by the Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy. After taking the solemn oath, Dean Prof. Wojciech Kamysz read the list of those who achieved the best results during the recruitment process for the majors: Pharmacy, Laboratory Analytics, Pharmaceutical, and Industrial Pharmacy. Then a representative of the students – Kamila Podpłońska, studying in the fourth year of medical analytics, took the floor. In her speech, she welcomed her new colleagues and encouraged them to join student organisations, such as the University Student Council, the Polish Pharmacy Students’ Association Gdansk Branch, and the Student Association of Laboratory Diagnosticians. The matriculation ceremony was highlighted by a lecture prepared by Prof. Jaroslaw Sączewski entitled Black Gold.


FACULTY OF MEDICINE

More than 600 student of the Faculty of Medicine were matriculated at the ceremony held on 29 September this year. First-year students of the following faculties: medicine, dentistry and dental technology, were admitted to the Medical University of Gdańsk. The ceremony was attended by the Rector – Prof. Marcin Gruchała, Dr. Habil. Agnieszka Zimmermann, Pharm.D., Assoc. Prof. – Vice-Rector for the Quality of Teaching, Prof. Radosław Owczuk – Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Prof. Przemysław Rutkowski – Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences with the Institute of Maritime and Tropical Medicine and by Deputy Deans of the Faculty of Medicine: Prof. Ewa Słomińska, Dr. Habil. Maria Bieniaszewska, Dr. Habil. Aida Kusiak, Assoc. Prof., Prof. Paweł Zagożdżon, Dr. Habil. Kamil Chwojnicki. Also present were: Dr. Habil. Magdalena Prokopowicz, Assoc. Prof. – Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy, Dr. Habil. Rafał Sądej, Assoc. Prof. – Deputy Dean of the Intercollegiate Faculty of Biotechnology UG & MUG and Jacek Kaczmarek Ph.D., representing the International Alumni Office. The event was conducted by Tomasz Kostrzewa – a doctoral student of the Department of Medical Chemistry, and supervisor of first-year medical students.

The oath ceremony was led by the Dean of the Faculty Prof. Radoslaw Owczuk. Then a congratulatory letter to the students of medicine, dentistry and dental technology specialties who obtained the highest scores in the recruitment process was read by Prof. Ewa Słomińska. Commemorative speeches were also given by Dr. Habil. Agnieszka Zimmermann, Assoc. Prof., Prof. Aida Kusiak, and Jacek Kaczmarek, Ph.D. The new colleagues were then welcomed by student representative Anna Prus, a second-year medical student.

On the same day, the matriculation of over 80 English Division students also took place. This time behind the presidential table sat: Dr. Habil. Agnieszka Zimmermann, Pharm.D., Assoc. Prof. – Vice-Rector for the Quality of Teaching, Prof. Radoslaw Owczuk – Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Prof. Przemysław Rutkowski – Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences with the Institute of Maritime and Tropical Mediciney nd Deputy-Deans of the Faculty of Medicine: Prof. Ewa Słomińska, Dr. Habil. Maria Bieniaszewska, Prof. Aida Kusiak, Prof. Paweł Zagożdżon, Dr. Habil. Kamil Chwojnicki and Dr. Habil. Bartosz Wielgomas – Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy. Jacek Kaczmarek Ph.D. – International Alumni Relations Officer, a member of the Alumni Association of our University was also present. The entire meeting was chaired by Narcyz Knap, Ph.D. from the Department of Medical Chemistry, supervisor of first-year medical ED students.

The new students took the oath of office at the hands of Prof. Radoslaw Owczuk. Then congratulatory letters were read out to the students who obtained the highest scores in the admission process. Dr. Habil. Agnieszka Zimmermann, Pharm.D., Assoc. Prof. and Prof. Paweł Zagożdżon also addressed a few words to the newly admitted students. In their speeches, they congratulated the choice of MUG as a university whose diploma guarantees high skills and competence. Representing the International Alumni Office Jacek Kaczmarek, Ph.D. emphasized that our University has been a leader in internationalization in Pomerania for years, and encouraged first-year students to actively participate in academic life, projects and events carried out by the University.

The last to speaker was Aria Zarei (second-year medical student – ED), who welcomed new colleagues from the medical, nursing, and pharmacy – English Division to the fellowship of students.

Both ceremonies were held in the hybrid form: stationary in the Senate Hall at Atheneum Gedanense Novum and online.


FACULTY OF HEALTH SCIENCES WITH THE INSTITUTE OF MARITIME AND TROPICAL MEDICINE

First-year students of the following faculties have been officially admitted to the Medical University of Gdańsk: Dietetics, Electroradiology, Physiotherapy, Nursing, Midwifery, Health Psychology, Medical Rescue, Public Health – Management in the Health System, and Environmental Health. More than 500 students were admitted to the Faculty of Health Sciences with the Institute of Maritime and Tropical Medicine at the MUG. Due to a large number of participants, the ceremony was held in two rounds in Prof. Olgierd Narkiewicz Hall, AGN. The matriculation was conducted by Damian Wnuk from the Division of Physical Therapy at the MUG.

The event was attended by Prof. Marcin Gruchała– Rector of the Medical University of Gdańsk, Dr. Habil. Agnieszka Zimmermann, Pharm.D., Assoc. Prof. – Vice-Rector for the Quality of Teaching, Prof. Przemysław Rutkowski – Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences with the Institute of Maritime and Tropical Medicine, and by Deputy Deans of the Faculty: Prof. Piotr Wąż i Dr. Habil. Magdalena Błażek, Assoc. Prof. ando also by Dr. Habil. Kamil Chwojnicki – Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Medicine & Dr . Hab. Magdalena Prokopowicz, Assoc. Prof. Marcin Gruchała, welcomed the newly admitted students to the academic community, congratulating them on being selected as one of the best universities in Poland. He encouraged students to work hard on their studies and their development and asked them to actively participate in the social life of the MUG and maintain a balance between study, work, and play. Dr. Habil. Agnieszka Zimmermann, Pharm.D., Assoc. Prof. joining in the congratulations, stressed the exceptional interdisciplinarity of the Faculty of Health Sciences with the Institute of Maritime and Tropical Medicine and encouraged students to set goals for themselves in the process of studying.

The Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences, Prof. Przemysław Rutkowski, then took the floor. In his speech, he assured about the high quality of teaching at the MUG, informed about the choice of classes and interest circles, and the Erasmus+ international student exchange program. He also encouraged interdisciplinary cooperation, as this will be a prelude to later cooperation within the interdisciplinary teams of the health care system.

Vice-Dean Dr. Habil. Magdalena Błażek, Assoc. Prof., gave a presentation on the pursuit of maturity and good quality of life. Then Prof. Sylwia Małgorzewicz, Head of the Division of Clinical Nutrition and Dietetics and Department of Clinical Nutrition, addressed the students of dietetics, congratulating them on their choice of studies and encouraging them to actively participate in the life of the University.

The ceremony was also attended by guests – representatives of future employers: Marzena Olszewska-Fryc – Vice-Chairwoman of the Regional Chamber of Nurses and Midwives in Gdańsk, Katarzyna Gierat-Haponiuk, Ph.D. from the Division of Rehabilitation Medicine of the MUH, Coordinator of the Independent Team of Physiotherapists of the UCC, Małgorzata Światek – Provincial Coordinator of the National Council of Physiotherapists, and Jakub Pietruszewski – Director of the Pomeranian Regional Planning Office. In their speeches, they congratulated the choice of the Medical University of Gdańsk as a university that guarantees a high level of education and expressed hope for future cooperation.

On behalf of the UUniversity Student Council, first-year students were welcomed by Jakub Deleżuch (5th-year student of health psychology). Newly admitted students who obtained the highest results in the recruitment process received congratulatory letters from the hands of the Rector of the MUG and the Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences.

Each ceremony ended with the screening of a film prepared by the Senate Committee on Ethics and Good Academic Conduct with a short message on the role of ethics in student life.
