Once again, our University is among the leading Polish academic centres. According to the results of the 23rd edition of the Perspektywy University Ranking 2022, the Medical University of Gdańsk is in the 7th place among all the universities in the country, improving its position by one place. It is also the highest-ranked medical university. The University is also well placed in this year’s ranking of fields of study, ranking 2nd for medical studies and pharmacy, 4th for midwifery, and 5th for medical stomatological studies, nursing, and public health. Moreover, it improved or maintained its position in 5 out of 7 ranking criteria compared to last year, placing 3rd in terms of scientific effectiveness and 5th in category of scientific potential. The ceremonial gala took place on 22nd of June 2022 in Warsaw. The event was attended by the Rector Prof. Marcin Gruchała and Prof. Michał Markuszewski, Vice-Rector for Science. Wojciech Murdzek, Secretary of State in the Ministry of Education and Science also honored it with his presence.
– For almost a decade, the MUG has held a high position in the forefront of Polish academic centres. The improvement in the ranking position confirms that our University is developing in the right direction, both in terms of scientific, research, teaching and clinical activity – says Prof. Marcin Gruchała, Rector of the Medical University of Gdańsk. – Although the promotion is a success “here and now”, it is also a foundation for further actions, the effects of which will be visible in the coming years. The good positions of GUT and UG, which together with the MUG create Fahrenheit Universities and together carry out the mission of creating a strong academic centre in Gdańsk with international recognition in the field of scientific research and modern education are also worth of emphasizing.
The Medical University of Gdańsk is characterized by a high scientific and development potential, which includes especially: experienced and reputable research teams, a growing number of prestigious international publications and grants, as well as a wide range and quality of research, confirmed by high categorization of units.
– One of the most important branches of university activity is science and it is not only about generating new knowledge, but also about the ability to acquire and use already known discoveries. The MUG’s rise in the ranking of academic universities is proof that our researchers successfully carry out their tasks, and the University properly supports them in this. This is also confirmed by the status of a research university, which the MUG has as the only medical university in Poland. The implementation of programs for young scientists and extensive international cooperation allow novice researchers to efficiently start their activities and establish contacts with foreign centres. The high level of education, the quality of which is confirmed by numerous certificates and accreditations, is also important here. Thanks to the scientific potential of our University, both young and more experienced researchers can carry out their own projects, using modern tools and comprehensive support – adds Prof. Michał Markuszewski, Vice-Rector for Science.
The ranking’s methodology, press material Perspektywy
The ranking of Perspektywy takes into account 29 indicators grouped into seven criteria: Prestige (12% weighting), Graduates on the labor market (12%), Scientific potential (15%), Scientific efficiency (28%), Educational conditions (10%), Innovation (8%) and Internationalization (15%). The weights and methods of determining certain grades under individual criteria have been changed in relation to previous years, while maintaining the possibility of “year-by-year” comparison of universities intended by the organizer. The SDG category has been added to the Innovation criterion, denoting the contribution of university research to the implementation of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (2030 agenda). In turn, the indicator Participation in a European university was added to the Internationalization criterion, which rewards universities that were selected in a competition by the European Commission. The method of calculating the Internationalization indicator within the same criterion has also been changed. This type of classification is one of the most extensive and transparent educational rankings in the world. At the same time, it fulfills the function of an important and reliable source of information for candidates for studies. As in previous years, the methodology of the ranking was handled by specialists from the Polish Academy of Sciences. Perspektywy ranking is also one of four that have an international quality certificate IREG Approved.
