Lights, camera...surgery!

As part of the modification of the curriculum for the subject Propedeutics of Surgery for the first time at the MUG, a film contest was organized for students. Part of the credit for the faculty consisted in recording thematic videos in groups by students in the third year of the medical faculty of Polish-language and English-language studies. The awards gala took place on May 31 this year. in the auditorium prof. Zdzisław Kieturakis (CMI). The presentation of the surgical statuettes organized by the Division of General, Endocrine, and Transplant Surgery of the MUG aroused great interest among students. The event was hosted by students Shraddha Singh (4th year of Doctor of Medicine program – ED) and Mikołaj Turski (5th year of Doctor of Medicine program).

Representatives of the University authorities and academic staff could not be absent during the ceremonial gala. The event was attended by: Rector of the MUG Prof. Marcin Gruchała, Vice-Rector for Development and Education Prof. Jacek Bigda, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine Prof. Radosław Owczuk, Vice-Dean of the FM Prof. Ewa Słomińska, Vice-Dean of the FM, Dr. Habil. Maria Bieniaszewska. The employees of the Division of General, Endocrine, and Transplant Surgery of the MUG were also present: the Head of the Unit, Dr. Habil. Łukasz Kaska, Justyna Bigda Ph.D. and Dariusz Łaski Ph.D. Moreover, the meeting was attended by Jarosław Furmański Ph.D. from the Office for Education and Development, and Magdalena Perzanowska, a specialist in the Office for Education and Development.

Out of 130 works prepared by students, 6 winners were selected in the following categories: actor, action movie, superhero movie, drama movie, instructional movie, and news program. The jury consisted of Dr. Habil. Tomasz Stefaniak, the Director of the UCC, the clinical hospital of the MUG, Justyna Bigda Ph.D. and Dariusz Łaski Ph.D., evaluated the presented productions, taking into consideration scientific and artistic values, ingenuity, independence of their production, originality in presenting the topic, as well as compliance of the content with the competition theme.

The awards ceremony was opened by the Rector of the University of Medical Sciences, Professor Marcin Gruchała. In the best actor category, the winner was Group 14 composed of: Mateusz Motowidło, Rami Yuser and Wojciech Kita. At the same time, Prof. Gruchała thanked the students for their commitment and work put into the film production.

Then Prof. Jacek Bigda, who presented the award for the best action film, turned to the guests.

I hope you had fun with this form of passing. Not only during your studies but also during teamwork, which is extremely important in creating such projects and in everyday work. At the same time you had the opportunity to acquire new skills – said Prof. Bigda.

In this category, the winner was Group S5 consisting of Agata Swistara, Emmy Johnsson, Fahad Al Karawi, and Dominika Bashton.

Another category was superhero cinema. The statuettes were presented by the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine Prof. Radosław Owczuk to Group 14, which consisted of: Anna Kowalska, Aleksandra Sobol, Aleksandra Kuls and Justyna Wiktorowicz.

The fourth category, in which the students were awarded, was an instructional video. The award was presented by the Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Dr. Habil. Maria Bieniaszewska to the students from Group S6, consisting of: Ansa Ithal, Chanchal Saini, Muskan Dua and Vidya Ponmani Thomas.

Group 5: Lena Głuszkiewicz, Joanna Zajączkowska, Maciej Kulas, Michał Szydłowski unquestionably dominated the news program category. The statuettes for the winners were handed out by the Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Prof. Ewa Słomińska.

Dr. Habil. Łukasz Kaska was invited to announce the winners of the last dramatic film category. The winner was the S2 Group consisting of Jodie Chan, Hanaf Alvi, Arbella Shako, and Nivedita Gopinath.

The winners received statuettes and material prizes. The first film awards ceremony for medical students ended with joint photos of the winners with the University authorities and competition organizers. Further editions of the event are planned for the future.
