Scientists of the Medical University of Gdańsk: Prof. Jacek Jassem, Head of the Department of Oncology & Radiotherapy, Prof. Godefridus Peters from the Department of Biochemistry, Prof. Roman Kaliszan of blessed memory, our University’s Rector from 2005 to 2008 and Prof. Piotr Szefer from the Department of Bromatology are amongst the best scientists in the world according to the portal Research.com. In the field of medicine 16 241 researchers were classified, including 19 from Poland and 2 from our University. First of them – Prof. Jacek Jassem took 8 911th place in the world i 7th in Poland. The scientist boasts a Hirsch index of 82, as well as 44 834 citations (8th place in Poland) and the authorship of 492 works (6th place in our country).
The second representative of the MUG – Prof. Godefridus Peters was in turn 11 972nd in the world and 13th in Poland. His Hirsch index is 75, and the number of citations is 26 208 (14th place in Poland). The scientist is also the author of 398 publications (7th place amongst domestic researchers).
In the field of chemistry, the ranking includes 13 244 scientists, including 62 from Poland. The MUG represents Prof. Roman Kaliszan of blessed memory ranked 3 694th in the world and 7th in the country. His Hirsch index is 65, the number of citations is 11 292 (23rd place in Poland), and the number of publications is 247 (27th place amongst Polish researchers).
In the field of environmental sciences, 7 673 specialists were classified, including 11 from Poland. The only representative of our University on the list is Prof. Piotr Szefer, classified* 3 098th in the world* and 2nd in Poland. The Professor’s achievements include the Hirsch index of 41, as well as 4 838 citations (5th position in the country) and 89 publications (7th position in Poland).

The authors of the ranking, based on the data from the end of 2021, analyzed a total of almost 167 000 researchers from all fields. They focused on their overall achievements and overall contribution to the development of the disciplines they represented. Created since 2014, the ranking takes into account the Hirsch index first, followed by the number of citations and the number of publications for each author. The list includes 1% of the best representatives of each field of science.
