Summary of the first Baltic Pediatric Student Conference

The first Baltic Pediatric Student Conference organized by the Scientific Circle of Pediatric Cardiology took place on 6th May, 2022. The meeting was held in a hybrid format, both at the Atheneum Gedanense Novum of the MUG and online. The conference included active and passive participants from universities across Poland who came to present their scientific work and learn about developments in the field of pediatrics. The the honorary patronage of the event was provided by the MUG Rector, Prof. Marcin Gruchała.

The hosts of the meeting were experts from the Department of Paediatric Cardiology and Congenital Heart Defects of the MUG: Head of the Unit – Dr. Habil. Joanna Kwiatkowska and Jarosław Meyer-Szary, Ph.D. The event was held in two lecture sessions. Prof. Kwiatkowska welcomed the guests and presented the lecture Progress in Pediatric Cardiology. The event was also attended by specialists from the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. George Dalembert, Ph.D. gave a lecture entitled Holding on to the Joy in Medicine by Converting Passion into Practice?. Next Colin Crilly, Ph.D. spoke about result of his team research in a speach entitled COVID and it’s Cardiac Effects on Children. The workshop on Neonatal Advanced Life Support was delivered by Łukasz Matwiejczyk, Ph.D. from the Division of Neonatology.

During the conference there was a competition for the best speech. The jury composed of: Jarosław Meyer-Szary, Ph.D., Magdalena Bazgier, M.D., Marlon Souza Luis, M.D. from the Department of Paediatric Cardiology and Congenital Heart Defects and Joanna Jassem-Bobowicz, Ph.D. from the Division of Neonatology selected 3 winners:

  • 1st place – Natalia Tomaszewska, Pomeranian Medical University in Szczecin, Life-threatening complications of a central venous catheter in a haemophilic patient with inhibitor
  • 2nd place – Ewa Wysocka, Poznan University of Medical Sciences, Fulminant purpura in a 15-year-old child
  • 3rd place – Anita Rutkowska, Medical University of Warsaw, How fever and hypoxia turned out to be pulmonary alveolar proteinosis?.

The conference was organized by the leaders of the Scientific Circle of Pediatric Cardiology: 6th year medical – ED students: Mary Abba (Chair-person BPSC), Juliana Orrego Castellanos (Scientific Officer), and 5th year medical – ED students: Eric Brabner (Public Relations Officer) and Mari Esho (Secretary), with great help and guidance from Prof. Kwiatkowska and Jarosław Meyer-Szary, Ph.D. Feedback from the participants showed overall success and anticipation of subsequent editions of BPSC.
