With deep sadness we inform that at 22nd April 2022 r. passed away

Prof. Dr. Habil. Stefan Zygmunt Angielski

Rector of our University from 1990 to 2003, Vice-Rector for Science from 1975 to 1980, Director of the Institute of Pathology from 1970 to 1975. Co-creator of the Intercollegiate Faculty of Biotechnology UG and MUG. Creator and first Head of the Division of Clinical Biochemistry. Initiator of the inclusion of laboratory diagnostics into the curriculum of the medical faculty. Specialist in the field of clinical biochemistry and renal pathobiochemistry. Honored in 2020 with the title of doctor honoris causa of the University of Gdańsk for his fundamental contribution to the establishment of a modern clinical biochemistry school in Gdańsk and for undertaking activities integrating the academic and medical community of Gdańsk

Professor defended his doctorate in medical sciences in 1958, he obtained his habilitation in 1963. In 1973, he was awarded the title of associate professor, and in 1980 he became a full professor. Author and co-author of over 250 research publications and over a dozen academic textbooks, including the 1976 Outline of clinical biochemistry and analytics, the first Polish textbook in this field and the Clinical biochemistry published in 1994. The organizer of the symposium Biochemical aspects of kidney function, which is groundbreaking for this branch of science (1973)

Founding member of the Provincial Branch of the Siberian Association in Gdańsk and its President in 1992-2002.

Founder of the Gdańsk branch of the Polish Society of Laboratory Diagnosticians, president of PTDL in 1976-1979, editor-in-chief of the journal Diagnostyka Laboratoryjna. Vice-president of the Polish Biochemical Society. Corresponding member (since 1989) and full member (since 2002) of the Polish Academy of Sciences. Head of the Cell and Molecular Nephrology Team at the Institute of Experimental and Clinical Medicine of the Polish Academy of Sciences and the Medical University of Gdańsk. Since 1995, an honorary member of the American Society of Physiology and the Polish Society of Nephrology. Corresponding member of the Polish Academy of Arts and Sciences, the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences and the European Academy of Sciences and Arts.

Decorated with the Silver Cross of Merit (1969 r.), Medal for Exemplary Work in the Health Service (1970 r.), Medal of Merit to the Gdańsk Land (1973 r.), the Knight’s Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta (1974 r.), Medal of Merit of the MAG (1978 r.), the City of Gdańsk Jan Heweliusz Scientific Award (1990 r.), Officer’s Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta (1996 r.), the Medal of the National Education Commission (2008 r.), medal Gloria Medicinae of the Polish Medical Association (2008 r.).

Funeral services will begin on 6th of May 2022 at the Srebrzysko Cemetery, 12 Srebrniki St., Gdańsk, by the issuance of an urn in the New Chapel at 10:30 a.m. with moving to columbarium about 11:00 a.m.
