Because of the new SARS-CoV-2 variant in the country, we noted a surge of COVID-19 infections in the last few weeks. This current viariant – Omicron – is characterised by much faster pace of spread than Delta variant, though it is observed that the symptoms are mild in those vaccinated or convalescents. Infections among employees, PhD students and students of the Medical University of Gdańsk are not broadscale, for now. That is for sure connected with the high percentage of vaccinated members of our community. Such a good result has facilitated a reasonably normal execution of classes during the first semester of the academic year 2021/2022.
Due to the above, the MUG continues teaching according to the current rules. Namely, lectures are still conducted on-line – via means of communication that facilitate a synchronic interaction between students and teachers. In urgent or extraordinary cases (for example a sudden self-isolation or quarantine of a group of students), it is allowed to change the way of conducting seminars or classes (from those in person to on-line). The decision shall be made by the dean or the manager of the field of study. Practical classes shall be conducted in direct contact, invariably – similarly to examinations and credit tests that shall be done in person.
Employees who are not academic teachers are allowed to work remotely, during weekly shifts. The decision shall be made by the manager of the unit to execute continous work in the unit and its timely manner.
Shall the situation change dramatically or shall there be national mandates, we should implement solutions to keep us safe. I ask you to be responsible and prudent.
Out of concern for our mutual safety, and heath of the ill in our clinics we do keep the obligation to use face masks in closed and mutual spaces. Let me remind you that according to the latest ordinance issued by the Minister of Health dated December 22nd, 2021 vaccinations against COVID-19 are now mandatory for medical professionals. This obligation also pertains to students who pursue medical education (medicine, nursing, pharmacy). Full version (in the Polish language) of the ordinance is available here: www.isap.sejm.gov.pl.
