With deep sadness we inform that at 20th December 2021 passed away

Prof. Dr. Habil. Wiesław Antoni Makarewicz

Rector of our University from 1999 to 2005, Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Medicine in 1981-1984 term, and Vice-Rector for Science from 1987 to 1993. Co-creator and first Dean of the Intercollegiate Faculty of Biotechnology UG and MUG. Professor at the Department of Biochemistry, former Head of the Department of Medical Biotechnology. Specialist in the field of enzymology, ammoniagenesis and wage metabolism. Chairman of the Council of Rectors of the Pomeranian Voivodeship in term 2002-2005. From 2005 to 2015 editor-in-chief of the University’s newspaper Gazeta AMG. First Honorary Professor of the Medical University of Gdańsk, honoured as the Aesculapius Gedanensis in 2018.

Professor defended his doctorate in biochemistry in 1964, he obtained his habilitation in 1975. In 1988, he was awarded the title of associate professor, and in 1995 he became a full professor at the Department of Biochemistry of the Medical University of Gdańsk. Author or co-author of 60 scientific publications and four books. Author of numerous publications on the history of the Stefan Batory University in Vilnius and the Vilnius roots of the Medical University of Gdańsk.

Philanthropist and social worker; founding member of the Lions Gdańsk Neptun Club and two-time governor of the 121st district of the Polska Lions Clubs International; member of the Hospice Foundation Council at rev. Eugeniusz Dutkiewicz Hospice in Gdańsk and the Foundation “I like to help” (“Lubię Pomagać”); President of the Management Board of the Foundation for Help for Senior Physicians of the Regional Medical Chamber in Gdańsk.

Member of many scientific societies, including the Polish Biochemical Society (he chaired the PTBioch Branch in Gdańsk from 1989 to 1996), the Gdańsk Scientific Society, and the European Society for the Study of Purine and Pyrimidine Metabolism in Man between 1997 and 1999.

Decorated with the Golden Cross of Merit (1983), the Knight’s Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta (1988), the Medal of Merit of the Medical Academy in Gdańsk (1995), the Medal of the National Education Commission (1998), the Medal of the Pomeranian Voivode Sint Sua Praemia Laudi (2004), the Officer’s Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta (2005), Medal of the University of Gdańsk (2005), the Prize Pro Bono Societatis Medicorum Pomeraniae awarded by the Regional Medical Chamber in Gdańsk (2017) and the Gold Medal of the University of Gdańsk Doctrinae Sapientiae Honestati (2018) and the Medal of the 50th Anniversary of the University of Gdańsk (2021).

Mass for the intention of Professor Makarewicz will take place on December 28, 2021 at 11:30 a.m. in the Church of Our Lady of Czestochowa at Maria Curie-Skłodowska 3b St. in Gdańsk-Wrzeszcz. Funeral services will begin at 1:30 p.m. in the New Chapel of the Srebrzysko Cemetery, 1 Srebrniki St., Gdańsk, with internment to the cemetery following at 2 p.m. The family asks not to offer condolences or bring flowers.
