Leader of the future from the MUG

Prof. Piotr Trzonkowski, Head of the Department of Medical Immunology of the Medical University of Gdańsk is a laureate of first edition of the Leaders of the Future contest organized by the Forbes newspaper. Results were announced on 25th of November 2021.

Prof. Trzonkowski conducts research on the Treg lymphocytes and their usage in diabetes and multiple sclerosis therapy. He is a co-founder of PolTREG company, founded specifically for this purpose. Together with other specialists from our University: Prof. Natalia Marek-Trzonkowska from the Division of Family Medicine of the MUG and the International Center for Research on Anticancer Vaccines of the University of Gdańsk and Prof. Małgorzata Myśliwiec, Head of the Department of Paediatrics, Diabetology and Endocrinology, was the first in the world to use Treg cells in the treatment of type 1 diabetes (DM1) in 2011, and this work is still being developed. Moreover, the team of Prof. Trzonkowski in collaboration with Dr. Habil. Kamil Chwojnicki from the Division of Anaesthesiology & Intensive Care and the Department and with the Division of Adult Neurology, and for several years he has been using Treg cells in the treatment of multiple sclerosis (MS) with a good clinical effect.

The jury of the ranking awarded 10 people out of 140 candidates, appreciating their commitment to work on various types of innovations, as well as their willingness to take action. The winners are scientists dealing with broadly understood genetics and biopharmacy, as well as entrepreneurs, creators of start-ups focused on new technologies and setting new trends.
