Matriculations in all Faculties of Medical University of Gdańsk have finished. In the academic year 2021/2022 over 1 600 new students will start their education at our University. Due to the epidemiological situation the ceremonies took place in a hybrid form. The events were led by Joanna Śliwińska Ph.D., spokesman of the MUG.
Faculty of Pharmacy
More than 200 first-year students of the Faculty of Pharmacy were the first to be matriculated. The ceremony, which took place on 27 September this year, was presided over by the Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy – Prof. Wojciech Kamysz. It was also attended by Prof. Marcin Gruchała – Rector of the Medical University of Gdańsk, Prof. Michał Markuszewski – Vice Rector for Scientific, Dr. Habil. Ewelina Król, University of Gdańsk Professor – Dean of the Intercollegiate Faculty of Biotechnology UG & MUG, Dr. Habil. Kamil Chwojnicki – Deputy Dean for Teaching Affairs, Dr. Habil. Agnieszka Zimmermann, Assoc. Prof. – Deputy Dean for Quality of Education and Students Training and by Deputy Deans of the Faculty of Pharmacy: Dr. Habil. Magdalena Prokopowicz, Dr. Habil. Danuta Siluk and Dr. Habil. Bartosz Wielgomas.
The newly admitted students were welcomed by the Rector of the MUG – Prof. Marcin Gruchała. In his speech, the Rector congratulated the students on their successful recruitment process. At the same time the Rector appealed for prudent behavior and compliance with current safety rules, including the use of mouth and nose masks and hand disinfection.
– As an academic community of a medical university, we are obliged to set an example of responsible attitudes. I cannot imagine that our students start classes without being vaccinated against COVID-19. Prudent and responsible behavior, guided by concern for others, is a special mission of the professions of public trust – emphasized Rector Gruchała.
Then Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy – Prof. Wojciech Kamysz addressed the audience. Both speeches touched on the exceptional conditions of studying in the academic year 2021/2022 and the challenges facing the academic community. The Dean of the Faculty was asked to take the oath by Jan Staszak, a first year pharmacy student. After taking the solemn oath, Dean Wojciech Kamysz read the list of persons who achieved the best results during the recruitment process for the majors: Pharmacy, Medical Analytics, Pharmaceutical and Cosmetic Industry. Next, Edyta Horzempa, a 5th year student of medical analytics, welcomed her new colleagues on behalf of the student body. The matriculation ceremony was highlighted by a lecture delivered by Dr. Habil. Agnieszka Zimmermann – Vice Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences at the MUG, entitled Does Health Need the Law? At the end of the ceremony the traditional student song Gaudeamus igitur was sung.
Faculty of Medicine
During a ceremony held on 29 September this year, first-year students of the following faculties: medicine, dentistry and dental technology, were admitted to the Medical University of Gdańsk. The ceremony was attended by the Rector – Prof. Marcin Gruchała, Prof. Michał Markuszewski – Vice Rector for Science, Prof. Radosław Owczuk – Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Prof. Wojciech Kamysz – Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy, Prof. Ewa Słomińska – Deputy Dean for Science and Personnel Development, and the Deputy Deans for Teaching Affairs, Dr. Habil. Maria Bieniaszewsk, Dr. Habil. Aida Kusiak, Assoc. Prof., Prof. Paweł Zagożdżon, Dr. Habil. Kamil Chwojnicki. Also present were: Prof. Anna Żaczek – Deputy Dean for Internationalisation and Development of the Intercollegiate Faculty of Biotechnology UG & MUG, Prof. Piotr Wąż – Deputy Dean for Teaching Affairs and Jacek Kaczmarek Ph.D., representing the International Alumni Office.
In the academic year 2021/2022, 543 students were enrolled in Polish-language courses at the Faculty of Medicine. Natalia Kowalczyk, a first year student of the Faculty of Medicine, asked the Dean to take the oath. Special congratulations were given to those who received the highest scores during the recruitment process. In their speeches Prof. Słomińska and Prof. Kusiak stressed that the time of studies is not only a period of developing scientific interests and gaining knowledge but also of making new friends and acquaintances.
– - Studying medicine is demanding, there may be worse days or minor failures. Don’t give up, keep fighting. See how many people have graduated before you. You will also succeed! – said the Deputy Dean, Prof. Słomińska. – We will do our best to make these next six years the most beautiful adventure for you, medicine the greatest passion, and the best time of your life spent here.
Mateusz Janeczek, second year student of medicine, welcomed his younger colleagues to the academic circle.
On the same day, the matriculation ceremony for 150 English Division students also took place. The ceremony was attended by the Rector – Prof. Marcin Gruchała, Prof. Radosław Owczuk – Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Prof. Ewa Słomińska – Deputy Dean for Science and Staff Development, and Deputy Deans for Teaching of the Faculty of Medicine, Prof. Maria Bieniaszewska, Dr. Habil. Maria Bieniaszewska, Prof. Paweł Zagożdżon, Dr. Habil. Kamil Chwojnicki, Dr. Habil. Aleksandra Gaworska-Krzemińska – Deputy Dean for Promotion and Development of the Faculty of Health Sciences, and Dr. Habil. Bartosz Wielgomas – Deputy Dean for Teaching Affairs of the Faculty of Pharmacy. Jacek Kaczmarek Ph.D. – International Alumni Relations Officer, a member of the Alumni Association of our University was also present.
Immatriculation was presided over by the Rector – Prof. Marcin Gruchała, while the oath-taking ceremony was conducted by the Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy – Prof. Radosław Owczuk. In their speeches, they congratulated the students on choosing the MUG as a university whose diploma guarantees high skills and competencies, and whose graduates are in demand on the job market. Jacek Kaczmarek Ph.D., paraphrasing a maxim by French writer and prince Pierre Marc Gaston de Levis, stressed that education obliges.
– Medical education makes you capable and entitled to help, and therefore obliged. You will have reliable knowledge, so you will be obliged to spread the truth and promote responsible and objectively beneficial attitudes and behavior for both individuals and society, based on scientific knowledge and not superstition, propaganda, and fake news – said J. Kaczmarek Ph.D. – Medicine is based on truth, it strives to learn it and apply it for the benefit of individuals and societies. Truth and respect are the basis of mutual relations between medics and in contact with patients.
The English Division students were welcomed by Abigail Kimber, a second-year medical student in the ED.
Faculty of Health Sciences with the Institute of Maritime and Tropical Medicine
First-year students of the following faculties have been officially admitted to the Medical University of Gdańsk: Dietetics, Electroradiology, Physiotherapy, Nursing, Midwifery, Health Psychology, Medical Rescue, Public Health – Management in the Health System, and Environmental Health. More than 700 people were accepted as new students of the Faculty of Health Sciences with the Institute of Maritime and Tropical Medicine of the MUG.
During the event, which was organized on 30 September this year, Prof. Marcin Gruchała – Rector of the MUG and Prof. Edyta Szurowska – Vice-Rector for Clinical Affairs, as well as members of the Faculty authorities: Dean Prof. Przemysław Rutkowski, Aleksandra Gaworska-Krzemińska – Deputy Dean for Promotion and Development, Dr. Habil. Agnieszka Zimmermann, Assoc. Prof. – Deputy Dean for Quality of Education and Students Training, and Prof. Piotr Wąż – Vice Dean for Education. The ceremony was honored by the presence of Prof. Wojciech Kamysz – Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy, Dr. Habil. Aida Kusiak, Assoc. Prof. – Deputy Dean for Teaching Affairs.
The ceremony began with the speeches of the Rector – Prof. Marcin Gruchała, and the Vice Rector – Prof. Edyta Szurowska. Congratulating on the successful recruitment process, they emphasized that the newly accepted students are the best of the best among the 12 thousand candidates who applied for studies at the MUG this year. A commemorative speech was also given by the Dean – Prof. Przemysław Rutkowski and Deputy Dean – Dr. Habil. Aleksandra Gaworska-Krzemińska. They welcomed the newly admitted students to our University and congratulated them on their good results in the recruitment process, which enabled them to get their dream studies. Professor Przemysław Rutkowski read out the oath text. The students were sworn in, thus acquiring the status of MUG students.
At the end of the ceremony, the new students were welcomed by Jakub Deleżuch, the chairman of the Faculty Council of the Faculty of Medical Sciences and a second-year student of health psychology.
