Organizational success of the Department of Physiology

Over 900 participants from 34 countries and 5 continents took part in XXVIII Congress of the Polish Physiological Society organized by the Department of Physiology of the Medical University of Gdańsk, representing the Gdańsk Division of the PPS. Event was held from 15th to 17th of September 2021 under the patronage of MUG’s Rector Prof. Marcin Gruchała in 3-5 parallel virtual streams presenting over 250 interactive speeches of 750 scientists in total. It consisted of 44 lectures given by invited experts, 71 lectures regarding recent scientific achievements, 5 workshops and 130 posters with discussions. Participants were representing numerous scientific centres, including 4 universities from top 10 of world QS rank of the best universities (Harvard University, University of Oxford, University of Cambridge, Yale University) and 10 more universities from 20th to 100th place of this rank. The biggest number of foreign participants came from Brazil, Ukraine, USA, Great Britain, Italy and Georgia.

Congress proceedings were inaugurated by Prof. Krzysztof Narkiewicz, who connected recent basic sciences achievements with their clinical usage in diagnostics and therapy of cardiovascular diseases. In the event’s program were 15 scientific sessions consisting of lecture and poster parts, dedicated to numerous issues connected with physiology and functions of various organs and systems of human organism. This year’s Congress’ has been organized under the motto From variety in physiology to interdisciplinary cooperation. Its priority vision was integration of multi-thread issues featuring various scientific fields specialists; from biology and medicine to engineering. Interdisciplinary sessions Physiology meets engineering and Multi-omics perspectives in physiology were expression of this.

Organized since 1937 in 3-years cycles convents and international congresses of the Polish Physiological Society become a renowned forum for presentation of scientific achievements and new conceptions concerning to functions of human and animal organisms, regarding pathophysiological mechanisms of diseases. This year’s Congress of the PPS, the biggest since over 30 years, included most of the physiology and pathophysiology fields from molecular level to examining of whole-organism regulatory functions.

Event’s formal organizer was the Polish Physiological Society in cooperation with the Polish Academy of Sciences and the Medical University of Gdańsk. The Congress has been prepared by Organizational Committee, in which primary roles were played by representatives of the Department of Physiology of the MUG: unit’s Head Dr. Habil. Tomasz Wierzba (President of the Committee), Paweł Musiał, M.A., Piotr Badtke, Ph.D., Stanisław Zajączkowski, Ph.D., Magdalena Zabielska-Kaczorowska, Ph.D., Elwira Smolińska-Fijołek, Ph.D. and Maria Smolińska-Bylańska, Ph.D. Content-related part of the event was supervised by the Scientific Committee headed by Prof. Agnieszka Cudnoch-Jędrzejewska from the Medical University of Warsaw, consisted of 32 members and reviewers who have chosen the applications regarding their high scientific value. Congress summaries have been published in a supplement of the Journal of Physiology and Pharmacology, while presenting authors have been invited to publish their full-text works in a regular issue of this newspaper.
