The Medical University of Gdańsk is once again among the best academic centers in Poland. In the results of the 22nd edition of the Ranking of Academic Schools of the Perspektywy Education Foundation, our University is in 8th place among all the universities in the country. For several years the Medical University of Gdańsk has been invariably the best Polish medical university. The University is also well placed in this year’s ranking of fields of study, taking 2nd place in medicine and pharmacy, 4th in nursing and midwifery, and 5th in public health.
- The Medical University of Gdańsk has been gradually improving its results in key areas, such as scientific effectiveness and scientific potential, moving up to 3rd and 5th position respectively among all academic schools. This is a great success and the effect of hard work of all members of our academic community, – says Vice-Rector Prof. Michał Markuszewski. – It is worth noting the very good results in the faculty category, especially in medicine and pharmacy, which confirms the high quality of education at the only medical research university in Poland.

Among academic schools, the MUG achieved the highest marks in the category of scientific effectiveness (3rd place) and scientific potential (5th place). It is worth noting the very high scores in the parametric evaluation of MUGs faculties, which ranked 2nd in this area in Poland, as well as in the development of its staff. The aforementioned parameters belong to the scientific potential category. Compared to previous years, we have improved our results in the Prestige category, which consists of two indicators, i.e. evaluation by the academic staff and international recognition measured by the university’s position in world rankings. The University also moved up in the Graduate on the Labor Market category, which reflects the economic fate of graduates – their employment and earnings.
- A very good result in this year’s Perspektywy ranking is a consequence of the implemented development strategy of the Medical University of Gdańsk in the field of science, didactics, and clinical activity – emphasizes the Rector of the MUG, Professor Marcin Gruchala. – The Medical University of Gdańsk is a university-based on the strong, highly specialized competencies of its staff, thanks to which we are constantly developing and strengthening our position. The high competencies of the MUGs staff, reinforced by modern infrastructure and state-of-the-art diagnostic tools allow us to successfully pursue our goals.
This result confirms the leading position of the Medical University of Gdańsk as a modern and recognized academic center. The University is characterised by its high scientific and development potential, which includes in particular: experienced and renowned research teams, a growing number of prestigious international publications and grants, as well as the wide scope and quality of the research conducted, confirmed by the high categorisation of units. The MUG is also the only medical university selected to the elite group of top 10 Polish universities distinguished in the prestigious competition “Excellence Initiative – Research University”.
The ranking of Perspektywy takes into account 27 indicators grouped into seven criteria: Prestige (12% weighting), Graduates on the labor market (12%), Scientific potential (15%), Scientific efficiency (28%), Educational conditions (10%), Innovation (8%) and Internationalization (15%). The weights of each grade remained unchanged from previous years to make it possible to compare the universities “year by year”, as the organizer intended. This type of classification is one of the most extensive and transparent educational rankings in the world. At the same time, it fulfills the function of an important and reliable source of information for candidates for studies. As in previous years, the methodology of the ranking was handled by specialists from the Polish Academy of Sciences. Perspektywy ranking is also one of four that have an international quality certificate IREG Approved. This year’s Study Direction Ranking was prepared – like last year’s – by the rules of university operation introduced by the Law on Higher Education and Science of 20 July 2018.
