"Meetings with Paediatrics" conference

Students of the Medical University of Gdańsk took top places during the 2nd national conference Spotkania z Pediatrią (Meetings with Pediatrics), which took place online on March 19-21, 2021. There were 31 active participants, whose papers were evaluated by a jury of experienced professionals. Our University was represented by representatives of 11 scientific circles: SKN Medycyny Ratunkowej (Student Scientific Circle of Emergency Medicine); SKN Toksykologii (Student Scientific Circle of Toxicology); SKN Kardiologii Dziecięcej (Student Scientific Circle of Pediatric Cardiology); SKN Neurologii Rozwojowej (Student Scientific Circle of Developmental Neurology); The English Division Pediatric Oncology Scientific Circle; SKN Otolaryngologii (Student Scientific Circle of Otolaryngology); SKN Ortopedii i Traumatologii narządu ruchu (Student Scientific Circle of Orthopedics and Musculoskeletal Traumatology); SKN Pasjonaci pediatrii przy Klinice Pediatrii, Gastroenterologii, Alergologii i Żywienia Dzieci (Student Scientific Circle Pediatrics Enthusiasts at the Department of Paediatrics, Gastroenterology, Allergology & Paediatric Nutrition); SKN Pediatrii, Diabetologii i Endokrynologii (Student Scientific Circle of Pediatrics, Diabetology and Endocrinology); SKN Żywienia Dzieci (Student Scientific Circle of Child Nutrition) oraz SKN Pediatrii przy Klinice Pediatrii, Hematologii i Onkologii (Student Scientific Circle of Department of Paediatrics, Haemathology & Oncology). The event was held under the honorary patronage of the Rector of the Medical University of Gdańsk, Prof. Marcin Gruchała, and under the institutional patronage of the University.

Sessions of student papers were accompanied by speeches by specialists from the MUG. A lecture on the Dziecko zakażone HIV (HIV-infected child) was given by Dr. Habil. Tomasz Smiatacz, Head of the Division of Infectious Diseases. Agnieszka Szlagatys-Sidorkiewicz Ph.D., Head of the Department of Paediatrics, Gastroenterology, Allergology & Paediatric Nutrition, talked about complications of malnutrition in children with chronic diseases, and Prof. Piotr Czauderna, Head of the Department of Surgery and Urology for Children and Adolescents, gave a lecture entitled Chirurgia – przeszłość i powrót do przyszłości (Surgery – the past and back to the future). Prof. Maria Mazurkiewicz-Bełdzińska from the Division of Developmental Neurology discussed new therapies in hitherto untreatable neurological diseases of childhood. The presentation entitled Złoty syrop, żółta zupa czy mikrobiota jelitowa? Kilka słów o przeszłości i przyszłości Fecal Microbiota Transplantation (Golden syrup, yellow soup or intestinal microbiota? A few words about the past and the future of Fecal Microbiota Transplantation) was prepared by Dr. Habil. Ninela Irga-Jaworska, acting Head of the Department of Paediatrics, Haematology and Oncology. The basis of scientific research was presented by Magdalena Bazgier M.D. from the Department of Pediatric Cardiology and Congenital Heart Defects.

During the conference there were 3 sessions of student papers and 1 session of original papers, during which 7 students of our University were successful.

In 1 session the prizes were awarded to:

  • Ewelina Wojciechowska (Medical University of Gdańsk) – 1st place for the thesis Interwencje prenatalne i postnatalne we wrodzonej gruczolakowatości torbielowatej płuc (CCAM) – opis przypadku,
  • Katarzyna Pawlik (Medical University of Warsaw) – distinction for the thesis Niezwykle rzadki guz jamy ustnej u noworodka – opis przypadku nadziąślaka wrodzonego,
  • Milena Sitkiewicz (The Medical University of Silesia) – distinction for the thesis Nadzieja na osiągnięcie niemożliwego. Pierwszy w Polsce pacjent pediatryczny poddany terapii CAR-T.

In the 1st another session, the top places were:

  • Zuzanna Gogulska (Medical University of Gdańsk) – 1st place for the thesis Czy „bóle wzrostowe” mogą być groźne? Analiza przypadku dziewczynki z ostrą białaczką limfoblastyczną,
  • Agnieszka Tutka (Medical University of Warsaw) – distinction for the thesis Ciężkie nadciśnienie tętnicze u małego dziecka – zawsze myślmy o zwężeniu tętnicy nerkowej,
  • Anna Szerszenowicz (Medical University of Gdańsk) – distinction for the thesis Zawał śledziony w przebiegu ostrej białaczki limfoblastycznej – prezentacja przypadków i przegląd literatury.

In the 2nd session of the competition, the awardees were:

  • Dawid Lewandowski (Medical University of Białystok) – 1st place for the thesis Ostre zapalenie trzustki i płyn w jamie opłucnej w przebiegu PIMS-TS. Rzadka manifestacja „zespołu pocovidowego”,
  • Kamil Dzwilewski (Medical University of Gdańsk) – distinction for the thesis Choroba Gravesa-Basedowa jako przyczyna udaru żylnego u 14-letniego pacjenta,
  • Ewa Sokołowska (Medical University of Gdańsk) – distinction for the thesis Atypowy przebieg „anorexia nervosa” u 15-latki w dobie COVID-19. Aspekty psychologiczne czy trendy społeczne – co ma większy wpływ na początek rozwoju choroby?,

The following awards were given in the original papers session:

  • Wojciech Nazar (Medical University of Gdańsk) for the thesis 5 kroków do zdrowia,
  • Izabela Marzec (Medical University of Warsaw) for the thesis Badanie wiedzy i opinii kobiet na temat szczepień w ciąży.
