Students awarded for fighting the COVID-19 pandemic

15.03.2021

From the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, MUG’s students have been proving a professional and mature attitude, engaging in a number of initiatives related to the fight against the coronavirus. Thanks to their support, opening of the COVID-19 Test Centre drive-thru was possible. Their courage and efforts were appreciated by the authorities of Gdynia City, during the meeting organized on March 12 this year. The Mayor of the City, Wojciech Szczurek, and the Vice-Mayor Bartosz Bartoszewicz, gave to the students’ representatives (Emilia Stanulewicz, 6th year, medicine; Szymon Porębski and Aleksander Goll, 5th year, medicine and Juliana Kopczyńska, last year’s graduate of the MUG) occasional diplomas and small gifts.

The meeting was also attended by: Vice-Rector for Student Affairs Dr Habil. Tomasz Smiatacz, Prof. Marcin Renke, Director of the University Center of Maritime and Tropical Medicine in Gdynia, Dr Habil. Katarzyna Sikorska, acting Manager of CMTM and Dr Habil. Maciej Grzybek, initiator and coordinator of the COVID-19 Test Center.

- It was physical work. Was it hard – it depended on the day. However, the work atmosphere gave me strength and motivation to keep doing it. Our team is extremely close and it is a pleasure to work with these people. I will definitely remember the whole thing very well when we return to normalcy – said Aleksander Goll, coordinator of the Centre. – The fact that we could organize it all here, that we were given personal protective equipment or that the city provided us with food, for example, is in my opinion something for which we should be grateful. And I am personally grateful that we were able to carry out this work here.

The functioning of the Center was possible and is possible thanks to the involvement of students of the Medical University of Gdańsk, who as part of their voluntary work in a shift system operate the hotline and material collection point. Their work allowed for almost a year mugto collect 14 000 swabs.
