The authorities of the Medical University of Gdańsk state that views presented by prof. Janusz Moryś during the meeting at Collegium Medicum of the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Bydgoszcz are his private opinions and cannot be in any way identified as the official stance of the University. We would like to emphasise that prof. Janusz Moryś participated in the meeting not as the MUG’s representative but the president of The University Commission for the Quality of Medical Education – an autonomous academic body that is independent from national authority.

The Medical University of Gdańsk is among leading academic centres in Poland. The University has provided education since 1945 based on valid Polish rules of law, international standards and recommendations. The basis of our mission is to teach future generations of medical staff and to ensure proper education of excellent professionals in the medical field. We make every effort to shape and promote ethics in our community based on the responsibility placed on professions of public trust.

As the MUG’s academic community we do share the concern about the quality of online education and the verification of the students’ knowledge attained this way. We do care for the quality of education to be the best, and the verification of the learning outcomes to be objective, honest and equal for all those examined.

At the initiative of the current MUG authorities an array of actions was taken to ensure the improvement of the quality of education to modernise and modify the curriculum. In our decisions we were directed by comments in students’ surveys that constitute a valid part of the evaluation of teaching in the University. We would like to remind that collection of fees for the execution of repeated classes in a given subject for students who did not verify achieving the required minimal learning outcomes and did not pass their examinations is regulated by the law; equal regulations are applied to all fields of study.

We have ensured that additional regulations are implemented in the rules of study to verify the correctness of examinations and credits as well as grade confirmation. According to the rules of study provisions should more than half the students sitting down to an examination on the first trial date attain an unsatisfactory grade, the Dean shall verify the correctness of the examination and approve its results. Moreover, if the student questions the correctness of the examination procedure, he/she enjoys the right to apply to the Dean, within three working days after the examiner has announced the results, requesting examination before an examination board. Having found the request justified, the Dean shall order examination before the board. The examination should be held within seven working days following the application filing date.

The MUG authorities support students in the process of education, respond swiftly to needs and difficulties reported by students, repeatedly intervene in situations regarding credits from particular subjects – during COVID-19 pandemic and online teaching that results from it as well. By our decisions and actions we build the culture of partnership. Any signs of actions that contradict above mentioned values are not accepted by the authorities of the Medical University of Gdańsk.
