13.07.2020

The invention of MUG scientists methods of culturing regulatory T lymphocytes (Treg) has just received a patent Method for in vitro propagation of CD4⁺ FoXP3⁺ regulatory T cells. Treg lymphocytes include available immune systems unlike to T lymphocytes do not protect against bacteria and viruses, but prevent over-activation of the immune system, thereby preventing autoimmune diseases.

The authors of the project are: Prof. Natalia Marek-Trzonkowska from the Department of Family Medicine of the MUG and International Centre for Cancer Vaccine Science of the UG and Prof. Piotr Trzonkowski Head of the Department of Medical Immunology of the MUG, Prof. Małgorzata Myśliwiec Head of the Department of Paediatrics, Diabetology and Endocrinology of the MUG.

The same team of scientists was the first in the world to use Treg cells in therapy for type 1 diabetes (DM1) in 2011. Research on the clinical use of Treg lymphocytes is still being developed at the Department of Medical Immunology of the MUG in cooperation with the the Department of Paediatrics, Diabetology and Endocrinology of the MUG, the Department of Family Medicine of the MUG and the company PolTREG S.A. Furthermore, the team of prof. Piotr Trzonkowski in cooperation with Kamil Chwojnicki M.D., Ph.D. from the Department of Anaesthesiology & Intensive Care of the MUG as well as the Department of Adult Neurology of the MUG, for several years has been using Treg cells in the treatment of multiple sclerosis (MS) with good clinical effect.
