Aleksandra Rutkowska, Ph.D. from the Department of Nursing Management at the Medical University of Gdańsk is the originator and co-author of an invention which has just received a patent. Diagnostic kit for the detection of bisphenol A (BPA) in urine was the result of cooperation between the Gdańsk University of Technology and National Institute of Public Health – National Institute of Hygiene.

The invention will determine the presence of the BPA in biological material and thus, allow for both a cheap and regular monitoring of human exposure to this substance and reduction of individual daily life exposure. This may be of key importance in the prevention of civilization diseases such as hormone-dependent cancers, obesity or infertility, as well as in the protection of pregnant and feeding women, and children.

Bisphenol A (BPA) is one of the most common endocrine active substances, which, due to its similarity – in terms of chemical structure – to steroid hormones, increases the risk of health disorders and civilization diseases.
