Elżbieta Senkus-Konefka, M.D., Ph.D., D.Sc., from the Department of Oncology & Radiotherapy at the MUG is a member of an international research consortium which just received a prestigious grant in the COST programme for the realisation of the project entitled LOBSTERPOT. Its aim is to introduce a multilevel coordination of research on lobular breast cancer, which accounts for about 10-15% of all cases of this most common type of cancer in women, affecting approximately 25,000 patients annually in Europe. So far, however, these tumors have not been examined apart and due to the relative rarity of occurrence, no major scientific projects have been carried out in this population. The LOBSTERPOT project intends to establish a platform for international scientific cooperation in various fields: epidemiology, genetics, biology, clinical medicine, bioinformatics and many other. Close cooperation with patients will be essential as well. All this is expected to contribute to the development of improved diagnostic and therapeutic methods for patients with lobular breast cancer.
Research groups from eight European countries and the United States participate in the project, with Patrick Derksen from UMC Utrecht as its leader
COST is the longest lasting European programme supporting multilateral cooperation between researchers, scientific engineers and representatives of small and medium-sized enterprises from Europe.
