The MUG segragates waste

29.02.2020

The Medical University of Gdańsk is an academic institution which attaches great importance to sustainable development and environmental protection. Therefore, on March 1st 2020 it will join the ranks of other universities which recycle municipal waste.

On account of the changes in the waste segregation regulations introduced on February 1st, the implementation of the University’s internal segregation policy had a major financial justification as well. If it had not been implemented the costs would be significantly higher for our institution.

The Department of Administration has already initiated the process of setting up marked waste bins in all of the University’s public areas (lobbies, corridors, kitchens). Only paper waste bins will be allowed in the rooms. Bio (used paper towels) and residual (hygienic) waste bins will be place in the bathrooms. Manual plastic bottle crushers will be gradually set up around the University as well.

From now on municipal waste in the MUG is segregated into 5 distinctive categories:
• paper – clean and dry
• glass
• metal and plastic
• bio – without animal waste, fat or bones
• residual (non-recycable) waste

Furthermore, used batteries, toners and electronic waste can be disposed of in special designated areas (next to main entrances and lobbies). In addition, both medical waste and old equipment will be stored in special rooms on the premises of each department.

Waste segregation is no longer voluntary – it is our joint responsibility. Failing to meet the new segregation policy will results in fines which will, in consequence, reduce the University’s budget. The financial resources saved as a result of a proper waste segregation will be used to support various initiatives and project that serve the entire academic community. It is up to us whether the effort put into the implementation of these new regulatons will result in significantly beneficial effects or failure and, thereby, financial consquences.
