MUG’s Oncological Student Scientific Conference (OSSC)

Two days, over seventy participants from 8 universities and unique opportunity to discuss oncological topics.

On 29th and 30th of March 2019, the 1st Oncological Student Scientific Conference (OSSC) took place at Medical University of Gdańsk. As part of the event, lectures, workshops and competition sessions took place. The conference was an international one, with all events conducted in English.

Keynote lectures were delivered by: dr hab. Jolanta Wierzba, M.D., Ph.D. “Artists and Rebellious Genes”, prof. Jacek Witkowski, M.D., Ph.D., “Aging, Cellular Senescence, Cancer and Immunity”, Jacek Kaczmarek, Ph.D. “Mind and Matter – Physiologist’s Considerations on Reciprocal Host – Cancer Interactions” and Bartosz Zimniak, MFA (Fundacja Mewka, Gdańsk) “Art Therapy in Pediatric Oncology (Performative Lecture)”.

The workshops enabled theoretical and practical teaching of bone marrow biopsy and trephine biopsies (Anna Irga-Staniukiewicz M.D.), punctures of the peripheral veins (Alicja Piechnik B.N.), assessment of nutritional status and body composition (Agnieszka Budka-Chrzęszczyk, M.D.) and techniques of ultrasound examinations (Student Circle of Ultrasonography at the Department of Ultrasound and Biopsy Diagnostics at the Department of Paediatrics, Hematology and Oncology). In the course of OSSC, the possibilities of using 3D printing in medicine in the lectures (Jarosław Meyer-Szary, M.D., Ph.D., Finn Schulz and Marlon Souza Luis) and two sessions of practical workshops to learn how to design models from medical imaging were also presented.

During the second day of the conference, 3 sessions of student presentations took place. Winners were selected in 3 categories:
  • ‘Original research’ – Agnieszka Kania, Medical University of Bialystok, “Is anticancer treatment increasing the risk of overweight and abdominal obesity in children?”
  • ‘Pediatric oncology’ – Jagoda Kruszewska, Medical University of Warsaw, “From lack of menstruation is a diagnosis of a patient with Swyer Syndrome.”
  • ‘Adult oncology’ – Adrian Perdyan, Medical University of Gdańsk, “Oral metastasis from hepatocellular carcinoma. A rare presentation of the three cases and literature review.”

Jagoda Kruszewska, a student of the Medical University of Warsaw, was the winner of the ‘Grand Prix’ award.

The 1st OSSC organizing committee was formed by students from the Scientific Circle, English Division Pediatric Oncology Scientific Circle: Zuzanna Grochecka (PD, V year), Małgorzata Styczewska (PD, III year), Dominika Dułak (PD, VI year), Karolina Haško (PD, VI year) and Ewa Maria Sokolewicz (ED, III year). The president of the organizing committee and the coordinator of the whole activities was a MUG’s student Marlon Souza Luis (ED, IV year). The circle’s supervisors are dr hab. Ewa Bień, M.D., Ph.D. and dr Małgorzata Krawczyk Ph.D., from the Department of Paediatrics, Hematology and Oncology.
