Liver Transplantation Centre is the new unit opened at University Clinical Centre (UCC) in Gdańsk, MUG’s Hospital. The liver transplantation program is implemented in cooperation with the Medical University of Warsaw (MUW). The first patient who was qualified for liver transplanation at the UCC (due to liver cirrhosis) was a 29-year-old man. The treatment took place on April 18, 2018 and lasted a total of 365 minutes. At present patient is in good condition.
On 27 February 2019 a press conference concerning the Liver Transplantation Centre was held at the UCC with participation of MUG’s Rector prof. Marcin Gruchała, director of UCC Jakub Kraszewski and dr Tomasz Stefaniak, prof. Zbigniew Śledziński, head of Department of General, Endocrine and Transplant Surgery MUG, prof. Krzysztof Zieniewicz, head of Department of General, Transplant and Liver Surgery MUW, prof. Alicja Dębska-Ślizień, head of Department of Nephrology, Transplantology and Internal Diseases MUG and Grzegorz Niewiński, M.D, Ph.D., head of Department of Anaesthesiology & Intensive Care MUW.
The University Clinical Centre is a multi-profile transplant centre – in addition to liver also hearts, lungs, kidneys, corneas, bone marrow and recently pancreatic islets are transplanted. Currently liver transplantation are performed at 9 medical centres in Poland.
