A unique treatment at UCC

The University Clinical Centre (UCC), the MUG’s hospital, will soon begin to transplant pancreatic islets. Researchers are waiting for the first good isolation of pancreatic islets. Not everyone is suitable because not every pancreas has enough islands. These will be pioneering treatments in Poland. The coordinator of the project is prof. Piotr Trzonkowski, head of the MUG’s Department of Clinical Immunology and Transplantology. The procedure does not require a major surgical procedure and has very few complications. This is a minimally invasive radiological procedure. The patient can go home the next day and does not have to take insulin. The injected pancreatic islets start to produce this insulin and the patient, in fact, is cured of diabetes.
