Professor Roman Kaliszan M.D. Ph.D. from the MUG’s Department of Biopharmacy and Pharmacokinetics, former rector of the MUG, was elected a member of the active Polish Academy of Arts and Sciences (Polska Akademia Umiejętności – PAU). The decision was made on June 16, 2018, in Krakow during the general meeting of the PAU.

The PAU is a corporation of 140 active members, 168 correspondent members and 184 foreign members. The number of members is fixed (numerus clausus). Active members are elected from among correspondent members. At present, there are two active members from the MUG’s – prof. Roman Kaliszan and prof. Janusz Limon and three correspondent members – prof. Stefan Angielski, prof. Jacek Jassem and prof. Krzysztof Narkiewicz.

The other correspondent members of the PAU related to the Medical University of Gdańsk included Stanisław Hiller, Kornel Michejda, Tadeusz Bilikiewicz i Michał Reicher.

The Academy of Arts and Sciences was created in 1872 as a result of the transformation of the Krakow Scientific Society existing since 1815. The name PAU was adopted in 1919. After the World War II, the PAU was liquidated and its property was transferred to the Polish Academy of Sciences (Polska Akademia Nauk – PAN). The change in the political system made it possible to reactivate the PAU in 1989, with contribution of prof. Mariusz Żydowo M.D. Ph.D., former Rector of the Medical Academy in Gdańsk (at present MUG).
