– I am not a citizen of Gdańsk by birth, but I am a citizen of Gdańsk by choice – this is how prof. Joanna Muszkowska-Penson, a retired professor of the Medical Academy in Gdańsk, commented on granting her the title of the Honorary Citizen of the City of Gdańsk. The professor received the award during a special session of the City Council, which took place exceptionally at the European Solidarity Centre (ESC) on May 26th, 2018.

The ceremony was opened by the chairman of the City Council, Bogdan Oleszek, who emphasized that granting prof. Joanna Muszkowska-Penson this title is a proof that today’s Gdańsk can appreciate and honor the merits of those who have contributed to shaping our city as a symbol of solidarity and freedom.

The ceremony attended former Polish President Lech Wałęsa, as well as parliamentarians: Bogdan Borusewicz, Małgorzata Chmiel and Jerzy Borowczak. Speeches were also given by Basil Kerski – director of the ESC and friends from the Solidarity opposition times: Bożena Grzywaczewska-Rybicka and Jacek Taylor.
