The first in the northern part of Poland transcatheter non-surgical mitral valve repair (MitraClip, Abbott) was carried out on May 8th this year in the 1st Department of Cardiology in the UCC headed by acting prof. Grzegorz Raczak. The patient was a 57-year-old man with severe mitral regurgitation. The surgery in the Invasive Cardiology Laboratory room was conducted by Michał Chmielecki M.D. Ph.D. and Dariusz Ciećwierz M.D. Ph.D. Transesophageal echocardiography during the procedure was conducted by Rafał Gałąska M.D. Ph.D. and prof. Marcin Fijałkowski M.D. Ph.D. Substantive support during the surgery was provided by prof. Piotr Szymański from the Institute of Cardiology in Warsaw. Anna Dylczyk-Sommer M.D. Ph.D. was responsible for the patient’s anesthesia.
The MitraClip technology imitates Alfieri’s method used in cardiac surgery, which involves joining parts of the anterior and posterior mitral valve flap with a special clasp, resulting in double mitral cavity light. It is possible to perform the procedure using MitraClip technology in the conditions of the cardiology intervention room without the necessity of opening the chest and using the extracorporeal circulation. The procedure is performed by accessing the femoral vein and involves only a small incision of skin around the groin.
