The book “The Changing Face of Volunteering in Hospice and Palliative Care. An International Perspective” edited by Ros Scott and Steven Howlett was published by the Oxford University Press. The publication is the first scientific item of such a wide range that presents the role of volunteers in palliative and hospice care facilities in various regions of the world, describing the impact of their involvement on the creation and current activity of hospices and the challenges facing hospice volunteering.
The authors of the chapter “Volunteering in hospice and palliative care in Poland and Eastern Europe” are prof. Piotr Krakowiak SAC, head of the Department of Social Work at the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń and Leszek Pawłowski M.D. Ph.D. from the MUG’s Department of Palliative Medicine. The text presents Poland as a leader in the field of engaging volunteers in palliative care in Central and Eastern Europe. There are also fragments about the Gdańsk Hospice Foundation, which for many years has been creating volunteer structures in Poland. The biographies of the priest Eugeniusz Dutkiewicz SAC and prof. Joanna Muszkowska-Penson who organised the first hospice voluntary service in the Tri-City.
