The Polish winter expedition to K2 mountain (8,611 m) starts on December 29 this year and is scheduled for about 3 months. The head of the expedition is Krzysztof Wielicki. Two specialists from the MUG – dr Robert Szymczak from the Department of Emergency Medicine and Marta Naczyk M.A. from the Department of Nutritional Biochemistry take an active part in the organisation of the expedition.
Robert Szymczak M.D. Ph.D., as a doctor of the national team, supervises the whole medical safety of the expedition. He is an experienced climber who obtained the three eight-thousanders (Dhaulagiri, Nanga Parbat, Mount Everest) and provided medical safety supervision for over 10 high altitude climbing expeditions. He is also a member of the International Society for Mountain Medicine and Rescue
The nutritionist of the national team, Marta Naczyk, is responsible for composing diets for people who are preparing for high altitude climbing expeditions and participate in ultra runs, cycling races and triathlons. She also conduct classes with students of the Nutrition and Dietetics field of study at the Medical University of Gdańsk.
