The only Familial Hypercholesterolemia Clinic in Poland opened in Gdańsk

The Familial Hypercholesterolemia (FH) Clinic in Gdańsk is the first and so far the only place in the country where patients and their families with suspected familial hypercholesterolemia may have professional and complex diagnostic procedures, including genetic testing. The outpatient clinic has started operations at the National Centre for Familial Hypercholesterolemia and operates thanks to funding from the National Health Programme. In the ceremonial opening of the Clinic which was held on October 24, participated Marek Tombarkiewicz – Undersecretary of State in the Ministry of Health, prof. Marcin Gruchała – Rector of the MUG, Jakub Kraszewski – Managing Director of the University Clinical Centre (UCC), Krzysztof Chlebus M.D. Ph.D. – Project Leader, prof. Edyta Szurowska – Vice-Rector for Clinical Affairs, prof. Tomasz Zdrojewski – Chairman of the Public Health Committee of the Polish Academy of Sciences, as well as Piotr Kowalczuk – Deputy Major of City of Gdańsk for Social Politics, and well-known representatives of the Institute of Food and Nutrition – Longina Kłosiewicz-Latoszek and prof. Barbara Cybulska.

The intention of the scientists is to create a model centre which will comprehensively diagnose and search for people with familial hypercholesterolemia. Each patient will be provided with dietary, genetic and psychological counseling. In addition, a smoker who wishes to stop smoking can benefit from the UCC’s anti-tobacco therapy. A visit in the FH Clinic is free and does not require a referral from a local general practitioner (GP). The Clinic is located in a building of so-called Student Hospital at 30 Zwycięstwa ave.
