Over 1600 students of the first year officially started their studies at the Medical University of Gdańsk. The inauguration of the new academic year took place on October 6th.
The ceremony was honored by the presence of Bogdan Borusewicz, Deputy Speaker of the Senate; Sebastian Skuza, Undersecretary of State at the Ministry of Science and Higher Education; Dariusz Drelich, Pomeranian Voivode; Paweł Orłowski, Vice-Marshal of the Pomeranian Voivodeship; Piotr Kowalczuk, Vice-President of Gdansk; Joanna Cichocka-Gula, Vice-President of Sopot; rectors and vice rectors of Polish universities, and others.
Rector of the Medical University of Gdańsk, prof. Marcin Gruchała emphasized that the University is high in Polish educational rankings and the number of students willing to study at the MUG is increasing, which is a sign of prestige but at the same time, it also reminds of the challenges that are connected with it. Rector stressed the fact that in recent years the MUG’s infrastructure developed and mentioned the Invasive Medicine Centre, the Medical Simulation Centre, the construction of the Non-Invasive Medicine Centre, as well as the construction of the Sports Centre.
Inaugural lecture “Cardiovascular innovation: lucky failures” was delivered by prof. Paul F. Grundeman from the University Medical Center Utrecht, the Netherlands.
Traditionally, the inauguration of the academic year is accompanied by a new exhibition at the MUG’s Museum – “Seventy years of the Faculty of Dentistry in the MUG”.
