The World Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS) Awareness Day is observed on September 9th every year. On this occasion, many events will take place in the upcoming days to draw attention to the problem of drinking alcohol during pregnancy.

“Pregnancy without alcohol – baby without FAS” is the title of the conference which will be held on September 8th in Kościerzyna. It is dedicated to health workers, social workers, educators, probation officers and parents. One of the speakers will be Mirosława Cichorek M.D. Ph.D., head of the MUG’s Department of Embryology, who will present a lecture “The beginnings of prenatal development. Alcohol as teratogen”. Students from the Student Scientific Circle (SSC) at the Department of Embryology will take part in a family picnic, which will take place at the Market Square in Kościerzyna on September 9th at 11.00 am till 2 pm.

FAS is the heaviest form of fetal damage due to mother’s consumption of alcohol during pregnancy. It represents a syndrome of congenital somatic and neurological defects. Alcohol acting on an unborn child can cause changes in the structure of his body, developmental defects of the organs, primarily the central nervous system.
